Back in a Type R

Messages

So after a few years I am back in a Type R. Previously I had an Championship White FN2 Type R but I was finally able to get my dream car, an E46 M3 so the Type R was quickly sold (owned for 6 months) and after a few different cars I am now back in a Type R.

I decided to sell my E63 AMG. It was an absolute beast of a car and I still miss it. It did everything well but it was not cheap to maintain nor was I able to drive it to its full potential. I don't have the talent and it broke speed limits far too quickly.

So the search began and I spoke to friends and read countless reviews. Eventually I decided to go for the turbo charged Type R. I had to keep reminding myself to spend less than what I sold the E63 for, which wasn't easy and after a few lemons I finally found one in blue, which was the colour that I wanted.

So, the car. It's not perfect.

Positives:
Low miles
Remapped
Brand new tyres
Intake
Dump valve
Exhaust
Interior is in excellent condition

Negatives:
Exhaust
A creak somewhere
Cracked info screen
Scratched gearknob
Surface rust on the bolts etc
Mats are worn

So, you may have noticed that the exhaust is on positive and negative. So I was always going to add an intake, potentially add a dump valve and was definitely going to change the exhaust. It has a Milltek exhaust and the drone is absolutely shocking. My ears are ringing after a drive and almost everyone gives me a dirty look. I need to get this sorted asap as I don't think my ears can take much more of this.

However, this thing is nothing short of a little pocket rocket with go kart handling capabilities. The gearbox is sublime and its an absolute joy going through the gears. It's not fast by any stretch of the imagination, however, for me it has the right amount of power. It really is a fun car to drive and I can't wait to get some road trips done.

It has been over serviced but not serviced this year, which sounds weird, so I have ordered the oil, filter and pollen filter. Next year I will probably change the brake fluid, clutch fluid and spark plugs so that I have baseline.

So imminent things to do:
Fit a dashcam
Oil and filter change
New gearknob
Find out what can be done about the exhaust

So, pictures:

It was time to do an oil, oil filter and pollen filter change. I then discovered how stiff the chassis is on these:

So I did my first longer journey in the car and managed to have a little play in some B roads in Frodsham.

The seats are super comfy and I wasn't uncomfortable even though it became a nightmare journey thanks to traffic on the M1 and M6 and then M56. I hate driving in Manchester haha. The drone from the exhaust was deafening so definitely need to sort that, however, I have bought a OE front cat so that should be a step in the right direction.

There is a creak when moving off/stopping so I will have that investigated and rectified. Sounds like a mount or something but will find out soon.

Lovely car mate. Sure someone might be willing to do a swap re your exhaust if you put it on the Facebook forums?

Thank you.

So its actually a custom exhaust, at one point it was a Miltek but it was changed. I have had it checked out and its supposedly good quality and is decatted which will explain why its so loud. I have bought a front cat for it so will see how loud it is once thats fitted.

Thank you.

So I've just had really bad news. Initially, it looked like the rear main oil seal was leaking and contaminated the clutch and flywheel. So I asked the mechanic to replace the rear main oil seal and upgrade the flywheel and clutch for the FK8. During strip down it appears that the rear main seal is fine, the clutch and flywheel are very worn and there seems to be a leak from somewhere at the bottom of the engine. The mechanic said he has only ever seen this once and it was rectified by Honda under warranty. This car hasn't been to Honda for a long time and has been modified too far for it to even be worthwhile trying to get them to cover it.

So its now a rear main seal, clutch, flywheel, sealant and around 20 hours of labour.

Gutted, but can't do much about it now other than pay to have it fixed...

Sorry to hear this news and I know how you feel as I need a new clutch in mine. Where did you buy the car from?

Doesn’t the FK2 have a dual mass flywheel which is a fair bit pricier than the flywheel in the FK8? I’m sure I read somewhere that the FK8 clutch went back to a simpler design meaning it’s also a bit cheaper?
I might be wrong but it could be worth a check. I’m sure I remember someone on here put an FK8 flywheel in their FK2.

I bought the car from a private seller so going to have to take this one on the chin.

Yep I'm putting the FK8 flywheel in my FK2 as an OE 'upgrade' as recommended by Phil at Dream Automotive

It's a lovely looking car, I have an ep3 and an just starting to thinking of getting an fk8 or fk2.

Thank you. I would probably wait a while for the new one to come out as I am sure the FK8 values will drop a little. Test drive both, the FK8 was more than I wanted to spend and I also wanted something a little more 'out there' hence why I chose the FK2. Both great cars though
