EML Flicker

Messages

Standard 2002 EP3

Check Engine light flickers under load, only when pulling hard through 3rd/4th, mainly in Vtec.
I Cant hear/feel any knocking/misfiring and no codes are stored, car is otherwise running perfectly.

Anyone have any experience of this before? Is a flickering EML indicative of detonation?

Will try and get it to TGM asap but would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

Has the car been mapped?

I had a bad map on mine and the eml was flickering and a few on here told me it was knocking.

So yeah in your case it could be as you said detonation, missfiring, dodgey fuel etc. Or in my case a dodgey map. Which tdi north sorted out for me (dodgey map wasn't tdi norths though for the record lol)

Would get it sorted and try not to drive it till you know what it is.

Battery is 6 months old, I don't have a multimeter but could get hold of one.

Ecu is standard/factory mapped as far as I am aware.

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I seem to have this problem as well now. The EML will flicker right around VTEC, which for me is currently around 3,500RPM. It flickers if I stay at this engine speed, but as I raise or reduce the revs the light will stay off. The engine doesn't hesitate or anything.

I changed all the plugs and coil packs, had the valve clearances done and had a specialist have a look all with no joy. Got fed up in the end and flogged it spares or repairs. When getting the valve clearances done they found bits of timing chain guide in the head, the chain was changed before I got the car, the guide may have broken up and damaged something? That's the only thing I think it could have been. Post up if you manage to fix it, would be interested to know. Give the coil packs a go first, might just be them?

If it’s flickering and you have Kpro then the Kpro might be set to flash when it detects engine knock.

Yes I have a KPro. My mechanic, plugged into the computer today. It came up with two fault codes - 22 Excessive change of the vehicle speed sensor signal & 23 - A problem with the engine speed circuit. Scratching our heads on these so far. Any ideas?

Disable EML flash for ignition knock on KPRO and see if it stops. If it does, you need to turn it back on and adjust your ignition timing and/or use super unleaded fuel.
Coming on at the point of vtec is when the engine will be at its highest load so more likely to knock.

Update: I went back to Eurospec a few weeks back, & they reloaded my map back onto the KPro. They reckon the map I had on their was not the same one as they'd tuned. There was a whole bunch of stuff turned off apparently. Anyway the EML still comes on, although not as much as before. I'm putting this down to the colder weather?

I'm waiting for Eurospec to get me booked back in on the Dyno with Romain.

More likely to knock with warmer conditions over cold. So it’s more than likely the colder conditions is helping with the issue but it’s still probably has far too much ignition advance

EML flicker with a KPro is more than likely knock detection. It's a software feature. Try super unleaded as said above and maybe a bottle of NF Octane booster, just to see how it behaves. Either way, it seems the timing needs to be retarded a bit to prevent knock.

Download KManager and under parameters, check if MIL flash on knock is switched on. You can also switch on Stock Knock Control.
