FN2 2010 Suspension Change

Gradually updating the Type R, having bought her a couple months back (black, 2010, 86k on clock). Aiming to do some track days / Auto Tests next year so concentrating on those bits while still keeping her good for the road.

Just done the rear suspension refresh - springs, shocks and bolts. Already feel the difference in the car, no squeaking from the rear (one shock I know was leaking), and tightens the rear up in corners. I kept it simple, ordering Sachs replacements of Euro-car Parts and doing the work myself. I'm no means close to being a mechanic but the work was fine to do.....only issue being the rear main bolts needing some encouragement with a blow torch!! Worth doing to update car as over 10years old and not too expensive overall (call it 400 quid i think it was roughly). Couple hours, bit of sweat and chunk out my palm (i slipped with a spanner like an idiot), but took opportunity to fit "type R" mud flaps as well. personal choice but I like em ;) The old Spring and shocks were completely done and rusted over so well due a change!

Next stop, the Front, The parts have just arrived (springs, shocks, anti-roll, top mounts), but I'll be bunging into a local garage to sort thats more involved and more time than I have currently. Hopefully another big step forward in the handling....then maybe trip up to TDI-North is needed for a ECU update. Anyone done this?

did my FN2 back in Feb/Mar this year with Sachs and other bits, does make all the difference once the new stuff beds in

You do front end yourself as well? From what I looked at it’s a bit more of a challenge than rear so I wuzzed out!

no, bought all the parts and got a mobile mechanic to do the job

Did you take it anywhere afterwards to get it aligned or anything? Just wondering if worth doing or hold out as new tyres need doing in 2-3months i recon.

Any other refresh points you'd recommend? Brake and brake calipers are on list as calipers especially look rusty as anything.

no alignment as replacing like for like (Sachs) there was no need, checking tyres now months later there is no evidence of uneven wear.

later on I did put news pads in F&R but they needed doing so everything got thoroughly cleaned and greased using this https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/pagid-ceratec-brake-lube-75ml-grease-526770250

also replaced all the slider pins, Pagid do a kit of new pins, boots and bolts
you could paint the calipers to make them look nice, use Smoothrite or this full kit (comes in multitude of colours) https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/e-te...nt-kit-includes-cleaner-paint-brush-993771931

BTW only showing ECP since I work for them, other sources are available.

Thanks, great shout. I did europarts for Sachs stuff as well, though went tegiwa for top mounts as cheaper randomly.

I'll be spending some time painting calipers soon now then!
