Oil questions and recommendations here

Hi Martin

Personally, I'd change it, but I work for an oil company :) . a 15w-50 oil is so thick when cold that it will take a long time to start flowing properly from cold and then too thick when hot, so won't flow quickly enough and won't protect as well as a 5w-40. Perhaps a 15w-50 would be okay in the southern US with that engine, but it all comes down to oil temps.

Cheers

Tim

Hey Tim,

Thanks so much for the quick replies. I will be using 5W-40 as soon as I'm due for my change up...It's true that it gets quite cold here in Canada and it can also get quite hot. I'll take a look around if I can get Amsoil or Redline in my area. Thanks so much for the suggestions.

I'm suppose to store my car November 1st - March 31st...I was told to change the oil pre storing and post storing, is that what you would recommend also?

Cheers, Martin LeBlanc

Hi Martin

No need to change the oil before it goes into storage, just give it a change when it comes out. If you use Redline, it's ester based, so will coat all the engine internals with oil and mean that they don't get exposed to air while the car is stored. If you struggle to get the Redline or Amsoil, is mail ordering from the US a possibility?

Cheers

Tim

Hello once again Tim,

Well, I'll be storing the car in November, like I had mentioned...I did the oil change on the 1st week of August with that Mobil 1 15W-50...So, correct me if I'm wrong, I don't have to change the oil before storing, only once I take it out of storing right?

I'll try to find some Redline around here, I'm not sure if I can get my hands on it...My licenced mechanic told me that Redline is just like Royal Purple, he told me that it's NOT good at all...But I have a strong feeling about you hahaha...And please, don't take offense to what I just told you. He just said that it wasn't good. He told me that Mobil 1 is the way to go.

And yes, I'm pretty sure that mail ordering is a possibility.

Sincerely, Martin LeBlanc

Hi Martin

Let the mechanic stick to what he does best and ask us about oil :) Redline oils are in no way like RP (we wouldn't sell them if they were). There are certain motorsport teams that are sponsored by very well known oil companies, but a few of them don't use the oil they are given, they buy Redline instead. Also, when there are manufactured sponsored test of oil on the internet and in magazines, Redline always seems to come second, after the oil supplied by the company that are paying for the test. That's pretty good going. There's nothing wrong with Mobil 1 (and the US versions are better than the European ones), but I'd go for Redline.

Cheers

Hey Tim, how are you?

Martin here again, thanks for the informative reply. I like how you answered the mechanic part in a good fashion haha...

I know you mentioned earlier that the Redline oil was ester based, so therefor it will coat the inside of the engine so that air won't get in while the car is in storage...Does this mean that the Redline oil would only be a storage oil or a running oil???

You also mentioned that you would change the oil right away since you are working for an oil company lol...If I don't change the Mobil 1 15W-50 right away, can I store it with that oil in there right until I take it out again in April of next year and then put the Redline in the engine??? Or should I change the oil before storing the car with the Redline oil???

Sorry I have so many questions...Thanks in advance for all the help.

Sincerely, Martin LeBlanc

Hi Martin

The Redline is fine for all kinds of use, the sticking to the metal is just a bonus for when the car gets left. As it's not long until you store it, just leave the Mobil in there, then next spring, swap to the Redline. Gives you plenty of time to get hold of it.

Cheers

Tim

Hey Tim,

I thank you very much for all the help...As of April 2012, 5W-40 Redline it is...

I heard of a gearbox oil that fixes a tranny with slight grinding...Is this true? I think it's like GM Syncrotech or something like that, I have no idea...Would Redline gearbox oil be a better choice than Honda MTF???

Redline MTL and Amsoil MTF work very well in those gearboxes. Some people swear by the Honda MTF, but we get a lot of feedback to say those oils work out better than the Honda fluid in a lot of cars.

Hey Tim, thanks for the quick reply once again...I'll be looking online for some Redline, I'll keep you posted if I found any. It will most likely be for April 2012 though haha. You might not hear from me anytime soon, but you just never know. There might be a dealer around my area though, I'll inform myself on that.

Did you ever hear about GM syncromesh or something like that??? Apparently it stops the gearbox from slight grindage of the gears...My buddy put some in his Honda Civic and it worked like a miracle. His car was grinding quite bad and once he put that is, it stopped completely.

Sincerely, Martin LeBlanc

Hi Martin

To my knowledge, the GM oil is just a pretty standard oil. The Amsoil MTF and Redline MTL sort out grinding pretty well.

Cheers

Hi

Would you suggest using Fuchs TITAN SUPERSYN 5W-40 in an FN2? noticed its on offer on your website.

Also do you have the link to the gear oil that you would recommend for an Civic FN2.

Thanks

Stu

Ive just bought a 54 plate EP3. Got no idea what oils best. Want something thats not gonna burn off to quickly. I keep hearing i should buy fully synthetic. Wanna spend about £40 ish

Check the first three posts for what's best, and then read the thread  people ask the same question fella over and over.
5w-40 is the most popular, I use Mobil 1 0w-40 and I have always used fully synthetic. No issues from me.

Hi

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Cheers
