Oil questions and recommendations here

Hi

You won't have any problems switching from semi to full synthetic and it's fine to top up with either.

The Fuchs Pro S, Millers CFS and Gulf Competition 5w-40 are all good for road and track use. Depending on how much track time it's getting, you may need to change more than once a year.

Cheers

Hi, I bought my ATR off my friend late last year. Its currently running Castrol Edge Fully Synth 5W - 30.
Its due for a full service soon, so just wondering if I should stick with the 5W-30, or change for something different

Yep it will be fine, the Edge is good stuff.

You can either carry on with it or use any other good quality 5w-30 or 5w-40.

Cheers

Not a big fan of it. Way overpriced and we had a few of their oils tested, not impressive results. They had high sulphur content, which combined with high engine temps can lead to acidic compounds being produced, the last thing you want around the metals of your engine.

Well i am using royal purple at the moment will it be ok untill next oil change in approx 5k or would you recommend flushing it out and changing?

Ok thanks for that and just for future reference what do you recommend for my DC5 its 2002 model 50k on the clock i never do track days just spirited road driving, and i do approx 12k a year???

I would go with either a good 5w-30 or 5w-40 synthetic for all year round use.

Hi OilMan

I've also got a 55 plate E87 BMW 130i. I changed oil to the recomended 5-30 and since then it sounds all tappetty! Only thing is, is an N52 engine, so has HVA lifters!
Rumours have it that enough 'air free' oil doesn't get pumped up to the exhaust valves properly. Would a thinner oil help with getting the oil to the valves properly and also the noise?
Always think it's a little strange putting 5-30 in a performance engine as I'd always have generally stuck to 5-40 or 0-40, but gone with BMW spec on this one!

Any advice would be appreciated!

John

Hi John

It doesn't actually need a 5w-30, it's fine to run on a 0w-30, 5w-30, 0w-40 or 5w-40, as long as the oil meets the correct BMW specification. Do you know if your car needs a BMW LL01 or 04 oil? It should be in the handbook.

Cheers

I'll have a gander when I get home mate, thanks for the reply.
I'll more than likely go back to good old 5w040 though :D
I'll get the spec and let you make me a recomendation :D
Shame it needs so much of the bloody stuff, at just under 7 litres, makes for an expensive oil change :D

just had service and garage used Castrol edge 5w30, I was using millers xfs 5w40 as a top up for the last year. should i top up with 5w30 or stick to useing 5w40 also is castrol edge a good oil and is 5w30 ok for my car. Have read it may use a little more oil.

The 5w-40 is fine to top up with. I'd use a 5w-40 rather than 5w-30 as the 5w-30 will burn off quicker if you use VTEC. Castrol Edge is a good oil

Hi oilman.

I just recently purchased a JDM DC2 Integra Type R.
It is a 1996 model and last servicing/oil change was around 92k and its now just crept past 99k so i fancy another service.

Been reading through this thread and obv 5w-40 seems the popular choice for these cars.
Ill be using my car daily with abit of performance when i want to. Also possibly going on track in September.
Should i use either one of these oils, Fuchs TITAN SUPERSYN or Motul 8100 X-cess?
Or should i use one of the Ester synthetic oils, looking at the Silkolene PRO S/ Fuchs Titan Race Pro S?

Also what oil is good to use for top ups?
Also as i am an amatuer at this as i havent done a servicing before, any other things i should change also?

Thanks Will

Hi,

You can use either the Fuchs or the Motul, we market them side by side. The ester based oils are better, it is just a case of if you are prepared to spend the money.

Ideally top up with the same stuff but if you need to top up now and dont know what is in there then all oils mix, so 10w-40 or 5w-40 will be fine.

Hello hello,

I just purchased a '96 spec Honda ITR like 3 weeks ago...Imported it directly to New-Brunswick, Canada from Japan.

I did my engine and transmission oil change in my driveway once it got here, I was just hoping to get some feedback on the lubricants I used.

I went with genuine Honda MTF (bought it right at the Honda dealership) and Mobil 1 15W-50 full synthetic engine oil

I also wanted to know if a genuine OEM Honda oil filter is good enough for my JDM ITR? Should I have went with an aftermarket oil filter? The old filter was a PIAA.

Just curious if this is good enough to feed to my baby haha. Please let me know if the fluids I used were suitable for the car and what would you recommend for the JDM B18C..Thanks so much.

Cheers, Martin LeBlanc

Hi Martin

The gearbox oil and filter are fine, but I wouldn't use the Mobil 15w-50, it's way too thick. I'd go for a 5w-40. If you are in Canada, I guess you can get Amsoil and Redline fairly easily, their 5w-40s are a much better choice.

Cheers

Tim

Hey Tim,

Martin here again, thanks for the reply, I appreciate it very much.

What would the Mobil 1 15W-50 be good for??? Hot hot places in the southern States or like exotic cars and what not?

But I will surely go with the 5W-40 for sure...Should I discard the oil I have in the engine right now or just wait for the next oil change???

Thanks again, Martin LeBlanc
