Which clutch kit for a supercharged FN2?

Messages

Hi guys.

I'm looking at taking my Civic down the supercharged route (TTS shaft drive and intercooler kit).

Before I do this the gearbox will be treated to an Mfactory helical LSD and a long 6th gear kit.

While the gearbox is out I will replace the clutch.

What is the "go to" clutch for this application. I will be looking at 300-350 hp on standard internals. No interest in going higher.

Will be 99% road use with maybe one or two track days a year.

Cost is always a factor as is drivability. I had an OS Giken twin plate on my Skyline GTR and it was awful!!

Any help and/or advice gratefully received.

Mark.

I'm sure Loxy will post in here, as he had about 587 different clutches in his FN2, including when it was charged.

I had a Competition Clutch Stage 4 which I was told was ideal for this application. It was really really heavy and didn't slacken off after a few thousand miles. It really did ruin the car as a daily driver so my advice would to be stay away from paddle clutches.

Best clutch I had was an Exedy USA (pressure plate and friction disc in separate boxes identify this one) OEM spec kit with Honda release bearing but it may not be up to the job for you.

Best of the rest was an ACT clutch on mine. It only failed as a bolt on the flywheel to the pressure plate was snapped on installation, which caused premature wear. Would have been OK otherwise.

Just get a Geniune Honda release bearing to go with it as other manufacturers ones don't seem to last.

Just to add, I've been recommended ACT clutches for charged applications in the past and heavy duty NA with lots of track work.

s/c EP3, but I've just got an Exedy stage 1 clutch. It seems to have been up to the task so far. I've put nearly nearly 25,000 miles on this clutch now.

Thanks again Loxy.

Can you let me know which ACT clutch kit I should be looking at? HD or Extreme?

I think that this is the one people seem to recommend.

Am I correct in thinking that I should fit the clutch kit before the supercharger to allow it to bed in?

As PM'd, I recently dyno'd at Eurospec. With a restricter fitted & cat back exhaust it made 320bhp & 250 ft-lb of torque. BHP wise that is a lot less than the kit is capable of, but this is my daily driver so I wanted to try & keep it somewhat reliable. I'd say the only issue I have with the clutch, is it will tend to slip when manoeuvring for parking on an incline, especially when trying to reverse & park. Never had any problems accelerating though.

It all depends on what torque that kit produces, as it's torque that will cause slip not bhp. Just go with the one that just exceeds the expected figure.
