Ep3 rattle

Hi, my first post and my first civic. Just looking for someone to shine some light on something for me. I bought a 2005 ep3 type r last week awesome machine I must say and lovely to drive but on Thursday I noticed a rattle coming from under the bonnet, after reading a few things people say could be the vtec cover so removed it but still the same listened a bit more closely and it's coming from the back of the engine (under windscreen) was just wondering if anyone had this problem before and shed some light on what it is. It's going back to the garage where purchased tomorrow by trailer obviously cause don't want to try it. Any suggestions would be great so I know what to expect. Thanks

How much of a rattle? Does it vibrate at around 3,000-4,000rpm?

Could well be the exhaust manifold heat shield. They're not hugely expensive and it's relatively easy to replace (4 bolts, assuming you can get to them).

When the car's cold, pop the hood and reach behind the engine, see if it can be wiggled. If it's not that then it could be the drive-shaft heat shield which sits beneath the exhaust manifold and covers the drive shaft; it's a bit nasty to get to and you'd be best served with some ramps or axle stands if you wanted to look it over yourself.

Yeah it is at 3000-4000rmp and is a really loud rattle. I hope it is just the heat sheilds but I am convinced it's not. I have a clip of the sound I will post aswell

It's no shield heard from the dealership and their mechanic has said it could be new engine. Only looked at top end and it's been there over a week now apparently stripping out bottom end to what's going on in there

Have you had the old screwdriver stethoscope out and listened to the chain and cylinders?

No mate as soon as I heard it I phoned the dealership and put it on a trailer and took it back to them. Still don't know what's going on just trying to find out if any others had same problem and shed a bit light for me

Ahh fair enough. I have a rattle on mine at idle, quite bad when cold. Everything still works and she still pulls fine, think it's the clutch springs going. It goes when you give it some throttle and she bites.

You should get a specialists second opinion.

I had the clutch springs issue on my prelude, one of the retainers at one end of one of the springs had worn and the spring was loose, worst noise in the world, like chucking a chain in a tumble dryer.

Sounds pretty accurate.

Was going to advise the same thing you should get second opinion.

If it's the clutch I'll get it done soon as I've saved enough money.

If the engines dead I'll run it till it blows.

Either way...! :D

Good result all things considered. What garage was it out of interest as some would just try and ignore the issue.
