Jimbo's 3rd Type R

The mx5 is needing more work doing to it than I want to spend on it, it has now retired.
Not a great deal needed but I had become bored with it (although fun commute in the sun) so if anyone wants a cheap project inbox me.

Deciding I would replace with an FN2 but nothing in my search radius hitting my budget that was right for me, I looked again at ep3's.

I couldn't buy a standard one again and go through buying all the same mods for a third time.

So I picked up a very well looked after one for a little over my budget.

Full Honda service history (apart from one at TDI north) every 6 months (OTT but not complaining)

Only 79K on the clock too!

Yes a third black 05 ep3, everyone at work thinks i'm mental.

Here's a pic anyway:

Mods list:

Engine:
240bhp tdi north tuned.
RBC inlet
Gruppe M induction kit
Tegiwa intake hose
Japspeed 4-2-1
HKS 409 hi power exhaust
K100 Hondata
Group N engine mounts
Thermal intake gaskets

Suspension:
Eibach ABP 30mm lowering springs
Eibach front & rear camber arms
Front & rear strut braces
JDM front and rear ARB
FRSU @ TDI North

Brakes:
Ferodo ds2500 pads, front and rear
RPB grooved discs, front and rear
Braided hoses

Externally the only differences are
Rota grids
Subtle window tints
Gruppe M scoop

Just over 10k in receipts in total including servicing.

The engine bay needs a little tidy and the aftermarket wheel nuts are awful (I still have a set of projectMu floating lug nuts from dotty to go on),
Rocker cover repaint and maybe a few dress up items.

But body work is pretty much immaculate, one tiny scratch is all I have found, interior like new!
Nice Bluetooth double din with DAB and can mirror iphone onto screen etc.

I plan to just carry on maintaining the car for the time being,
Then future plans are swapping cat back from the HKS to something more OEM looking even though it sounds great.
Hopefully eventually get an LSD, but clutch wasn't done long ago.

Not driven a tuned ep3 before so it was fun drive home.

Happy to be back behind the wheel of another Type R.

Sounds like it's pretty much had everything done already, good purchase. So many people seem to go back to an EP3 in the end!

Not bad at all, pre modified you can get a lot of mods for the money. Good choice Jimbo! As you've said, the only thing really missing is the slippy diff. Have they had the chain and tensioner done?

Yeah nearly everything I want to for it.

He had a set of new cams for it going cheap but didn't get round to fitting them.

He bought a cheap escort cosworth & Megane 265 to replace it

Saved a fortune, took me 30 mins to go through al the paperwork he had with it.

The chain is literally the only thing it hasn't had done servicing wise.

Yeah maybe diff next year with final drive

Do it, it'll be a hoot with even just a 5.1 final drive!

The HKS will be coming off next year too and swapped with something more subtle. Fit a watermelon in the back of this thing.
Makes the M2 I had look small

I wonder how large a potato you'd need to make some extra power?

(Mighty Car Mods reference for anyone confused)

They tested OEM backboxes VS gimp cannon back boxes Vs straight pipe Vs POTATO in exhaust.

The potato was peeled and made as spherical as possible with a small clearance to the bore of the pipe, say half an inch. It was then suspended with wire roughly central.

Potato made the most gains.

Nice, ill skip the potato and stick to something JDM I think.

Ill watch when I have sound at home, no sound card here

To be fair from what I have read about the HKS Hi Power it doesn't make the best gains when mapped.

Awesome stuff Jimbo. Looks like a great base to start from.

I said I wouldn't get another.. but here I am (loving it too)
I would have had a DC5 but current budget wouldn't allow it
