FK2 Factory Alloys - Alu or Mag and the myths

If you try 7 or 8 let me know how it fits. Also there are several shades of red. Which one did you choose?

I was just playing about with some black 6mm tape to see what the wheels looked like without the red band really mate.

7mm is needed.

Post any proof of one or the other as I keep seeing misunderstandings in the forum.

First let's clarify what an alloy is - it is actually a mix of materials with the named material comprising the most metal.
At the risk of teaching how to suck eggs, here is the Wiki article
Also a specific article for Magnesium wheels
More confusingly, mag wheel is a generic term for any alu alloy wheel as magnesium wheels were the first popular type of wheel alloy - but actual magnesium alloy wheels are found mainly on older cars, track cars and some bikes, they don't tend to be in common modern automobile usage.

All I can find are examples of Alu for the FK8 - it is entirely likely that alu is the main metal and magnesium takes up some minor percentage of the overall alloy composition:

The FK2 are alu as well - this post appears to show someone has gone to the trouble of testing them:

This pic is from a Tokyo trade show with Hitachi showing off the FK2s - so unsure of how this belief has persisted.

The confusion came from the box for the FK2 wheels stating "Aluminium Magnesium Wheel." It has persisted ever since. :D

Powder coating involves heating the wheel and paint for it to cure onto the wheel. Temps are higher (200°C) than curing paint (20°C), and that can weaken mag wheels.
We do Ferrari and Lamborghini mag wheels and never had a problem.

Hi Guys,

I've just become an owner of an FK2.

Sorry to refresh this thread, but...

I have 2 questions based on this very significant thread.

1. Based on jay.dee's research above I'm pretty confident that FK2 Alloys are refurbish-able via stripping and powder coating... But I'm still a little nervous about the idea, has anyone had them done and what was the results...? (At the moment I can see 3 FK2s for sale on Autotrader as a reference).

2. Is there a way a powder coated can reinstate the red rim after the refurb? Maybe rim tape and a lacquer coating on the face only? Again, any experiences on this would be nice.

Thanks all!
