FN2 Starting Issue

Messages

Hi Guys and thanks for the welcome,

Recently purchased and had serviced my 2007 FN2 Type R. Service was done by Honda pre-winter and coolant was also replaced as a precaution. No faults were found with the car.
However, I have a intermittent fault which is with the car starting:
The first time the car didn't start it just gave a whirring sound and so I thought the Starter had gone - so i rocked it in gear and it then started. When i told Honda they said that a faulty starter motor is unheard of? This issue has bee happening on and off since.

Has anyone had any similar issue and what was the remedy?

Thanks for any insight!

Cheers for the replies guys!

While I'd love it to only be the battery, we checked it using a voltmeter yesterday and its reading 12.8V while off and 14.somethingV when running, so it would seem that the battery is fine?

I had the same issue with mine. You can hear the starter spinning, but not engaging. Turned out to be the flywheel. I think there is an old thread on here? Honda also issued a service bulletin about this issue.

Taken car to Honda today they said starter was not engaging and battery was no good like you guys suggested they wanted £729 for starter so after nearly crying I opted for just getting the battery done. Fingers crossed extra boost from it will help the start. Thanks again for advise ☺☺

What! Have you tried one of the independants? Hopefully battery will sort it out. Keep us posted

Was the cost for removing the gearbox and changing the flywheel? If so, there are specialists like Area Motorsport who will do that for a fraction of the price.

Got car back and found an immediate improvement on starting, keeping my fingers crossed it is okay. Holloway96 the £729 was just to replace the starter motor. Ive had a quote from TGM sport for starter motor of £300 but still hoping the battery has solved the problem. Was more worried about it being a flywheel/ring gear problem as hasn't been inspected but trying to be an optimist. Thanks as always for all you guts support.

Quick update....for anyone interested, i had a whole week of trouble free starting and really starting to enjoy the car. However this morning very cold -2 and the dreaded whiring sound and no start. Looks like i will have to eventually get the starter done.

Does it make that sound and then start up when pressing the button again?

Yes mate. Same whiring noise I only tried the button once more, then rocked it in gear a couple of times and it started again. Since then no problems at all. Very frustrating as no one has ever heard of a starter motor failing.

Strange. Mine has done that about 3 times in my 16 month ownership but started straight away when pressed again.
Prob need a new starting motor but if it starts second time round i wouldn't say it's urgent
