FN2 Possible clutch

Hi all,

Ok car is 10 years old this year and has covered just over 100,000 miles (clutch has done about 68,000 as has a warranty claim before the car got to 3 years old).
Daily drive for the past 2 years has been town driving stop start in traffic at peak times.
Changing gear with normal driving isn’t a problem and is as smooth as ever, but if I give it then beans and venture in VTEC it can, for a short while be more difficult to engage gear.
It goes in ok, but can sometimes be met with a little resistance.
Also, when in VTEC and then changing gear, a funny smell always appears in the cabin. It’s sort of like a burning smell.
At first I thought maybe it was some unburnt fuel, but now I’m not so sure.

How can I tell if the clutch needs replacing because I’ve read that it doesn’t generally slip like most others?

The bit point on the pedal is also about 1-2inches from the floor. It’s never been adjusted.

Problems changing gear at high rev's is usually a sign that the clutch is on it's way out on a Type R.

Needs changing by the sound of it. My car had the smell, engaged about 2" from the floor and would not get into gear easily at high revs. Got it changed for around £475 all in, best thing I've done to the car to date. Got my driving enjoyment back.
Get the oem three piece kit, got mine from a Honda garage via ebay for around £160.

Just out of interest, where did you get it replaced?

Performance Autoworks in Fairford, they specialise in Honda (and Mitsubishi). Did a great job.

It is driving perfectly ok on general driving so i'm ok for now. I just need to be wary that it probably will need doing soon.
I'm based in East Kent and am very selective with who i take my car to for repairs or services. Can anybody recommend a good garage or Honda Specialist in or around this way that would be cheaper than a main dealer?

I am also experiencing a stiff clutch and crinchy gears. Tgm sport in fleet are very reputable and quoted me £460 all in.

I too get a faint burning smell in the cab when venturing into V-TEC range but no issues with the clutch or gearbox hence why I've never put two and two together.

Car has just over 68k on the clock.

I also get a slight burning smell when hitting vtec sometimes and after a lot of reading discovered it could be some unburnt oil/fuel travelling down the exhaust manifold. Whether this is correct I don't know but I also need a clutch replacement in the near future, stiff pedal, close to the floor and sometimes difficult selecting gear in vtec.

Is there an average rating for the clutch's lifespan on an FN2 out of interest? I'm assuming that mine for instance is the original and with no receipts to show otherwise, I have to presume it is.

Usually 60-80k. Although I understand it can be sooner on FN2's, I can't remember why.

Presume from the phasing you used the quote from TGM was recently?
If so I will definitely give them a call. I would make the 2 hour trip if the price were that good. Did they give a timescale too in terms of how long and what their availability is?

Yes got that quote (give take a few £) just last week. Well worth visiting as been nothing but brilliant the 2 years I've used them.
Also tom will drop you off town centre (and pick you up) whilst work is being done so you can kill some time.

He didn't say but i imagine 3-5hours? If someone can add the time it takes?
