Wandering ep3

I know our roads are crap but the car has become a bit "wandering", kind of tram lining when driving under normal conditions, the steering is pants. Put it hard into a corner and it's very stable. I've got 215/45/17 AD08r on 7.5j rims with the same offset as oem and a JDM rarb. Other than that a standard wheel/suspension set up. I've checked bushes and mounts and they look ok, shocks and springs seem OK, and tyre wear is even.
I haven't had an alignment done but I'm planning on springs, camber set up in the near future. Tie rod ends and ball joints seem OK, I may check the steering rack for play this weekend. I know people will say ep3s have this trait but my first one wasn't as noticeable. Anything else I can check?

If it's always been like it then I think your first port of call is the alignment. I know you plan to change suspension parts which will upset it anyway but may be worth getting it checked to see if that's the culprit? What's the wear like on the tyres as that may give you a clue as well.

Even wear, but excessive camber could be offset by excessive toe I suppose. I'm changing the front brake pads this weekend so I'll give things a check over.

You’re running a wider tyre and a wider rim which will contribute to your symptoms.
You’ve increased the width of the wheel track, the less difference in size there is between the length of the wheel base and the track width, the more ‘twitchy’ the handing becomes.

It's hardly a big change and the centre of the wheel is in the same place, just 6mm increase on the inside and outside. Felt bad again today.

Mine has a similar trait, albeit not as severe, on stock wheels with PS4s in your size and I have had the FRSU done with all supporting mods.

I'd say its one of those EP things and see how it goes once you've had the work done?

I've just bought some aluminium spigot rings to replace the plastic ones. Gonna check my rack slider later too.

Geo will most likely be a factor, but don't forget that temperatures have been dropping so the AD08R's won't be getting as warm as in the summer months, so this may be part of the issue.

I think bump steer is a big issue and I'm trying to find a way of reducing it. I understand that the steering rack can twist but can be reduced with a plastic looking insert. The other items I'm considering are hardrace inverted track rod ends which attach underneath instead of on top of the strut tower, can these be run on oem spring set up? Same question goes for RCAs.

I had a steering rack riser. Was a right caaant to fit but removed all the bump steer from my civic. I also had to get modified steering arms as I couldn't get enough adjustment on the standard ones.

I can imagine. Mine is not lowered yet, trying to figure out if I can adjust the arms with inverted track rod ends to negate bump steer. Even on oem the arms rise from the rack to the strut tower.

I had the tegiwa rack riser, the quality of it was kack, it game with half the tread missing so I took it to work and tapped the rest of the hole myself, then complained and got a full refund. After that it functioned fine. As for arms I believe mine were made by Tom at TGM. I think the were OEM with a section welded in but I can't remember.

Checked everything this morning and all seems fine, I took the front strut brace off, think the car may be too stiff for the roads.

So Chris is that good in your opinion. I know it's fantastic in my DC5. I've actually spun three times in a straight line. Got the pics to prove it.

No, I think it's a waste of money and the garage which fitted mine and specialise in Honda's said the same. They did say that in some rare cases the OEM one can wear away, but on early DC5's this was recalled by Honda IIRC.

If the steering would be that badly affected there would be a global manufacturers recall about it as if the guys who sell these are to believed there's EP3's and DC5's crashing everywhere and going up in a ball of flames.

Hey Tomcat didn't mean to offend, you didn't have this problem so it does not apply. But Chris I had the dreaded clunking and wandery steering in my DC5 race car and the Delrin Rack Slider fixed the problem. So you haven't obviously had this problem and Tomcat I'm not afraid to pass some decent info on about a fix that actually work's. The clunking is the dried Factory Grease inside the Rack not doing it's job anymore and the Factory Slider had seen it's day. So just to reiterate I'm in no way gaining anything by passing on a Link about something that actually is better and will be more durable than OEM. Life has to always be on the improve or we are just staying still.
