JMR's Honda #5

Picking Honda #5 up at the end of the month.

Nothing too exciting, and I'm not trading in the Porsche :)

Just something that can serve as a daily, with all round weather ability so I'm not worried about getting stuck in the winter.
Looking forward to being able to use it as a means of transport instead of a luxury, and not worrying about where to park it safe to avoid door dings in car parks etc.

I'm getting.......

...a Honda CR-V AWD diesel

First sign of snow and I'll be out putting it through its paces

Oh no not a diesel :(

Yeah but alongside a Porsche and a Liquid Yellow Clio RS200 it balances out ok I think ;)
They can be stored away and come out on fair days only during the winter

Forgot to say I added the CR-V to the multicar insurance.

Added the grand sum of £123 per year to the policy. :D
I couldn't be bothered in shopping around at that price

I'll try and update this as fast as poss and add pics so its all relevant :)

October 2018
With the winter coming I really fancied trying to keep the 200 and the Porsche off the road.
A mate of mine at work has a 2006 Honda CR-V 2.2 CTDi Executive with nearly 200k miles on it. His dad has one too.
He said I should get one as a daily.
I listened to him, and a couple of the techies and they convinced me that it was a good idea to try and find one.

I found one by chance after less than a week of looking that was going to end up going to auction from one of our dealers in group.

I contacted them and bought it through the Colleague Purchase scheme ( at cost  )
All it need was a 12 month MOT, and 6 months tax sticking on it :D

The car was a couple of hours away, so I asked the one of the guys at the dealership to send me some pics, and if he said he thought it was ok I'd have it.

Here's the pics I got...

And in fairness to them they sent me pics of some scratches and bits they thought looked a bit rough :(

All in all, I thought worth a punt, and maybe I could tickle those scratches up with the machine.

Cue a couple of weeks wait and two train tickets up to Halifax

And fast forward two weeks...

I had my five remaining days off work so the first day was to go and collect the car.
It was washed for me so it was reasonably presentable from the outside.
But god when I opened the door :doublesho
... it was hanging inside :(

It was filthy, the sort of car where you wipe your feet before you get out

The mrs and I sat in it and looked at each other, oh well, this is what you get for not much money lol

Drove about half an hour and had planned to stop for lunch at a Harvester pub.
Got out and jesus christ whats that smoky smell I said.
Going back nearer to the car, oops, its the car. :(
Thought it might be a leak from the manifold.
It is what it is, I thought, and I said if it gets us home (100 miles) it will be a result haha. :)

We got home ok, but sitting in standing traffic the smell of smoke was that bad you had to turn the fans off and open the sunroof. !

That would be a job to be sorted another day.

Friday gave us both all day to get the inside of the car cleaned up.

Here's befores (really dusty, dirty, sticky, sweets and rotten apples cores stuck to the carpets under the seats - you get the idea)

Interior afters shots to come soon :)

Sit tight I've got some teaser pics of the inside coming up...

Started 830am on Friday morning and finished 430pm Friday afternoon.

The mrs helped me, she got stuck in moving the back seats up and out and cleaning all up under them, and she was armed with a bottle of BH Surfex HD and a few MF's

Not the best of photos but I'll follow up with some with the dSLR next weekend.

IMG_2108 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Interior cleaning process was mainly hoover then clean everything with BH Surfex HD at a strong dilution of 6:1

Leather was degreased and then painted the worn bits with LTT Auto Leather Recolour in standard black - a great product, made a nice job.

Then leather all cleaned again with Dr Leather spray, agitated with a leather brush from PB.
Seats look great now and to get rid of a bit of that bagginess in the finish I heated it up gently with the hair dryer, stretching it at the same time and then letting it cool.

The leather looks even better now.

Door cards and door shuts protected with AG Vinyl & Rubber, sprayed on and quickly wiped over and removed with a clean MF - this left a nice satin and non-greasy finish.

Looking presentable on the inside now, to say its done 160,000 miles :)

It probably looked ok until the sun hit it....

P1030754 by *JMR*, on Flickr

That would be another days job.

P1030755 by *JMR*, on Flickr

How about this for a 'before' reflection shot

P1030759 by *JMR*, on Flickr

I was under no illusion that this was going to get sorted on a Saturday afternoon :p

Coming back to the smell, I initially had the smoky smell from the engine (more on this later) and an unusual, but not entirely unpleasant smell inside.

...after cleaning under the front seats, I found a Glade bathroom air freshener
(don't know whether this had fallen out the previous owners shopping bags or had been put there on purpose)

I thought it smelt a bit chemical in there, and have to admit the whole of the interior over the space of 2-3 days calmed down to just the smell of a really nice clean car, with the hint of Dr Leather :thumb:

More to come, I'll be adding some more exterior shots and what I've done to it later.

Some more pics :)

To say the paint had lost it's gloss would be an understatement.

Before shot in the sun

P1030762 by *JMR*, on Flickr

50:50 before/after

Left side untouched, right side machined

P1030761 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Drivers side had a long scratch from the front wing to the rear tail light :(
This machined out nicely.

You can see the scratch in the left side of the panel, the right side of the panel has been machined

P1030764 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Better :)

And a lovely clear reflection shot of the passenger rear wing

Car was washed with Bilt Hamber Auto Wash, and a light decon before machine polishing with Sonax EX04-06 as a single stage correction and enhancement on a Green RUPES 6" pad with the CYC DAS6 Pro+

Protection was a quick blitz with my 50:50 mix of Sonax BSD/Megs Ultimate Quik Detailer
If you haven't tried this mix - it's a must !!!!
Ease of application is great, flashes off quickly and pretty much streak free.

Beading is ridiculous.

For reference the RS200 has been clayed, fully decon'd, machine polished and sealed with Fusso coat.
And the beading with the 50:50 mix on the un-prepped and un-machined roof panel is indistinguishable from the adjacent panels.

Hence the reason for going 'quick detail' on the CRV.

I'll just top it up every other wash

I addressed the issue with rusty D-rings out of the boot.

Got the dremel out and ground them back to bare steel, then applied 4 coats of hammerite satin black.

IMG_2121 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Stuck them in the oven for a bit to harden off while the mrs was out...sssshhhh ;)

IMG_2122 by *JMR*, on Flickr

I had got a problem with the Sat Nav (original unit) since picking the car up.
The display said

DVD DISC IS READING AN ERROR

I checked the disc wasn't scratched.
I stuck a DVD / CD lens cleaning disc in - that didn't work.

So I took the Satnav unit out and disassembled the DVD unit to clean the laser lens

IMG_2126 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Couple of connectors to unclip before flipping the DVD cover over by 180 degrees to access the lens.

IMG_2127 by *JMR*, on Flickr

IMG_2128 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Flipped and supported on some stacked up car mags so I didn't stretch/damage the ribbon cable at the left hand side

IMG_2129 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Took me about an hour, including taking it out, cleaning the lens and putting it back in.
Started the car, it tells you to leave the engine running for 10 minutes while it located the GPS signal/satellites and locks your location.
Couple of minutes in, sorted - it boots up, and I'm looking at the map :)
Happy days, and it cost me no more than a pack of cotton buds and some time.

A nice pic the mrs took while we were driving around in it

Check out the mileage

I love these round figure mileages. :)

IMG_2130 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Next bit of the project that really let the car down was the front wipers and wiper arms.

The arms were badly corroded, and the blades themselves were even rusty!!

IMG_2145 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Sanded down with aluminium oxide paper, then finished a bit better with P1000/P1500 wet + dry paper (used dry)

4 coats of Hammerite satin black (spray can) - painted 15 mins apart while hung on the clothes line ;)

IMG_2146 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Oh dear the old wipers :(

IMG_2149 by *JMR*, on Flickr

And the freshened up wiper arms, ready to receive new blades.

IMG_2162 by *JMR*, on Flickr

Just like new ones :)

IMG_2163 by *JMR*, on Flickr

And just befitting of all this wiper work, I cleaned the screen with Angelwax Vision and the magic sponge, then Carpro Ceriglass on a rayon pad with the Porter Cable, before sealing with 2 coats of Angelwax H2GO.

In the cool morning dew

IMG_2147 by *JMR*, on Flickr

And the car as it stands now

IMG_2164 by *JMR*, on Flickr

I made a list early on of things to do.

...and that list grew pretty quickly once I got a bit attached to the car after I'd put some effort into making it look ok

37 Fit privacy shades

Only thing I still have to do on the list is

28 Wet sand and polish and protect drivers headlight

The smoky smell was resolved within a week of having the car.

We had a laugh in the workshop that it sounded like a steam train chugging along.
Lifted the bonnet and tapping noise was coming from under the engine cover.

It was a leaking injector seal pi55ing fuel out.

50p brass part, removed the offending injector which was a bit tricky, and replaced the seal.

Everything back together and it was spot on - no chug chug chug train sounds.

I feel like of all the people who could take this on within this forum, you’re going to struggle with this the most.

Not because you’re not capable, but because this is going to push all your buttons until it’s resolved.
