TomCat's Evo X

So as some of you know, after my EP3 I ended up with an S2000. I didn't intend to buy it and it all just kind of happened. Well that car turned out to be a right lemon, there was more rust than metal in most places and it sounded like it was going to die at any moment. After a lot of thinking, I decided I had had my fun with it and it wasn't worth ploughing money into. I did think about buying a nice one for a long time but decided against it.

As all this was happening a close friend at work decided he was going to part ways with his Mitsubishi Evo. This is a car I had always wanted, although I had always wanted an 8 or 9 and wasn't sure about a 10. However after driving it I was sold. The deal was done and 5 years after saying I was going to buy an Evo I had finally done it.

So this is how she sat when I first got her home. The car is a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X 300 GSR SST, and although it is an automatic I love it. Already modified and sat pretty at not much over 80,000 miles, the car was basically at the spec that nearly every Evo X seems to now be. The mods included;

External:
Coilovers (Tein)
XXR alloy wheels (not sure which ones)
Personalised number plate
Respray (previous owner owned a bodyshop and always paints all his cars, it's not perfect but for a 2009 car looks good)

Engine:
K&N air intake (Typhoon)
K&N solid upper inter cooler pipes
3 port boost solenoid valve
Decat (not sure what brand yet)
Cobra cat back exhaust (this is blowing and needs to be replaced.
Remap (The previous owner lost the dyno sheet although I do remember him getting it done, we think the car made around 370bhp).

Since owning the car I have been busy with it, first things first was giving it the wash of a lifetime;

Also in this time I hardwired in a dash cam, as I had issues in both my Fiesta and S2000 with idiots causing damage to my car. So now I was covered. The next things were boring but essential, 4 new tyres and servicing by my local mitsi specialist (MitsiArt in Portsmouth).

In the meantime I picked up some wind deflectors, ordering these was a bit more awkward then I had planned as multiple sources said they would both fit and not fit. I took the plunge and ordered some Hekos from eBay. Luckily when they arrived they fitted perfectly.

I also sourced a cheap plastic vortex generator, my hope being it would fit okay and I would dip it or wrap it, as much as I love the carbon ones at over £200 I don't need one that bad. However when arriving the generator fitted badly, and I didn't feel like even with some modification it would fit well enough and be secure. Luckily eBay had me covered and it was shipped back to the sender and I got a full refund.

Most recently I set to sorting out the rear badges, ultimately I would like to get some carbon ones, however as a cheap interim I ordered some plastidip. These didn't come out 100% as I had hoped, however they will do for now. At some point someone has painted these black, and they look good, however they did a terrible job of it. So these look better than they did.

So that it as the car sits right now, as for plans for the future I am not sure. Part of me wants to go mental and spend every penny I can get hold of. Whereas part of me loves how reliable the car is as it is. Also to chase more power as it is the auto means having to not just build the engine, but also get the gearbox sorted as well. Other plans including hanging onto it for a year or so, and then maybe looking at Evo 9s or something else.

I’m jealous man, was looking at X’s for the longest time but convinced myself that in the long run an FK would be the cheaper option really like the external look of these even though some would argue they’re more subtle that previous generations

Not keen on the back end of these for some reason but overall, I still like them and the X is a head-turner for sure. Looks real nice in blue as well.

Think the Evo V/VI shape is my favourite.

I think stock they are one of the better looking Evo shapes, 9 is still my favourite, however I feel you have to do a lot to them to get them looking spot on.

The back end can be quite plain, especially when they have been debadged. It's all made up though by the massive silly wing.

Looks good, hope you can make it to the meet on the 28th.

Touch wood I will still be there.

Very nice I remember wanting one of these.

Sure the M2 and both civics easily made up for it.

Great looking cars, what it like on eating tyres?

Well since owning it I have already shelled out for 4 new tyres, how long they last will be interesting.

Lovely beast this is mate, XXRs suit it as well I think, especially black chrome on blue. I used to have those wheels on my MX5 I loved them (easy to kerb though!)

Evo 9 MR is one of the cars on my to own list, but the price they are fetching for a high end FQ model is silly...

I like the tyres, there just not the right offset I think. Look a little lost in the arch. It's easier to see in person.

As for 9s I would love one. However getting the right one is super hard. In good condition and spec is basically impossible. Especially now they are aging.

Offset is easily sorted with a set of good spacers. ;)

I looked at spacers, without having to change the studs I can't get some I need. Either too little thread on the studs or too wide for the hubcentric sort.

Get on to Paul Howard at JDM Garage. They can machine custom ones for you in house. Any PCD pattern. Any width. Anything you want. They’ll even anodise them any colour for you. Not cheap but they are solid as a tank. I had them on my 32 with some custom bits to them, extended threads for the wheels was one and the seat for the nuts to bolt them to the car was deeper than usual. They were faultless.

They do sound good. I'll give them a look. I'm tempted to get wider wheels anyway, so would research and get the right offset. That's my current plan. Also massively tempted by a set of volks.
