The media are blaming it on Brexit, standard reaction right now. Bad times whatever the reason.

You never know, in 3 years time the UK might have a more favourable trade deal with Japan than the EU does.

That's not good news. At least its not closing next month, give people chance to relocate etc.

From what I've read they are taking production back to Japan. Not sure how that blames Brexit. You would think they would move it to somewhere else in the EU if that was the case.

Not good but this country has been bled dry of all manufacturing for years. Go back to the 60's and we had a lot of motor and aircraft manufacture. The past governments have sold us out imo.

We just aren't a competitive place for manufacturing.

Too much union power. Too high wages. Plus being geographically isolated.

True. But we did beat the japs at their own game when it came down to production efficiency. We're more than capable at being the best.

Labour wise we might become more competitive after brexit, depending how much the pound crashes.

Brexit, diesel sales, prior plans to go back to Japan, tariffs, they all seem to be quoted in the news.

Why would a foreign investor not protect their native work force when times are "hard"?
This is the danger of welcoming inward investment like a hungry whore.

That cannot happen. A clause in the Japan-EU FTA prohibits Japan form making a deal better with a third country than what it has with the EU, unless the EU agrees. This is a pretty standard mechanism in modern trade deals and is the reason why the claims made by our lying politicians that we can do better on our own with better deals are nothing but bare faced lies.

Really crappy news. Felt like the Swindon plant was something that would always be there. Going to be a massive blow for the area as Swindon IS Honda. Bet a great many of us here have cars that were put together by the lads there...

Reading the BBC article though, it said that one of the production lines had been closed for a long time anyway before this. Also, Swindon only makes Civics?

Maybe there should be a protest rally where we get the word out and assemble a mega fleet of Hondas to drive up to the factory!

An equal one will be ok though

I did this with thousands of others when I had my MG ZS180 and longbridge closed. It was a great show of solidarity but unfortunately changed nothing.
