FN2 Coilover Shocks to replace stock

Hi,

Recently bought my first decent car, as have always had old bangers. It's a 2008 nighthawk black FN2 which me and the missus absolutely love, it's reignited the joy of driving and see it as a new ongoing hobby.

We bought it just over a month ago from a garage and they did an MOT before we picked it up. However, we'd noticed knocking noises from the front but put it down to the harder suspension (not having a sporty car before). We ended up taking it to our local garage that we've used for decades and he was shocked (no pun intended) that it had passed its MOT. Basically both front shocks are badly leaking oil and need replacing.

We are going to approach the garage as they obviously just had it pushed through the MOT and we are meant to have a 3 month warranty but I am not holding my breath.

So was thinking, I don't want to just have them put any old cheap shocks back on so will try and get some money back and we use it to go towards an upgrade, some Coil Over Shocks all round front and back.

Can anyone recommend some coil over shock kits for this car, budget, mid and high end?

I'm up for lowering the ride height, but would def want it adjustable. Doubt I will be doing track so don't need anything too fancy.

The budget is not massive but once I get an idea of the range I'll have to see what I can do lol

So far have found these

out of price range really:

Please bear with me as I am a noob when it comes to mechanics and cars but very much want to learn.

Hello and welcome

Firstly I wouldn't bother with coil over set up, unless you plan on track use.

Some decent bilstein shocks with eibach progressive lowering springs will give you a much better ride on the road than standard set up, never mind a worn out set.

coil overs are never one to do on the cheap really

If you are dead set on coil overs spend wisely.

Maybe look at these over the yellowspeed? But more than likely over budget

Right ok interesting thanks for that, good to know about the coil overs too, as I said its all fairly new to me.

So if I am not going to use it on the track, coil overs might be too hard for normal driving, I'm better off getting close to stock replacements like SACHS or Bilstein and then Eibach springs? Then spend the money I would have spent on something else.

If you change both the front from stock and leave the rears as stock would that cause issues with ride and handling as opposed to changing them all out for a set?

You buy the springs as a set of 4, I wouldn't advise just changing the fronts as the springs are different types... OEM are linear springs and Eibachs are progressive. I can confirm from personal use the Eibachs are much more forgiving than the OEM springs.

Depending on how many miles your car has done I would say it's worth just getting Eibach springs and see how you get on from there.

Alternatively the knocking noises could be worn drop links.

Another vote for Eibach springs with uprated shocks

Get your wheel alignment done properly too, that'll make a world of difference.

+1 for Eibach springs and I would go for Bilstein B4 shocks, Bilstein B4 is an OEM equivalent shock but meant to be better than OEM plus they have a good build reputation. Reasonably priced too.

Thanks for all the replies.

Typically, something else has come up not car related that needs my money so am gonna have to do this on the cheap unfortunately :(

The garage that sold me the car is going to replace the shocks free of charge, so it will at least get sorted. I'll then get my local guy to check it over. Hopefully they wont put cheap ones on.

Thanks again though I will def bear this all in mind and probably change all the coils over at some point in the future.

Just thought I'd add..... the garage fitted new SACHS shocks on the front (R+L) and the car feels like a new car now. Even more chuffed with it than I was before :D
