FK2 Engine management light

Hi guys, first time posting here so sorry if this particular issue has been mentioned before.

I've had the EML come on and read by a local garage which come back with a variable cam timing system malfunction. I took it to Honda and they first said that the solenoid failed their tests and it'll need to come out and be tested. I phoned them up a couple days later to find out the issue has gone past the solenoid and they're now telling me the engine needs to come out and be stripped ?

They won't give me any information as to what they think it may be all they say is " we won't know until the engines out and stripped" but what I dont understand is when the code is cleared the car drives normal ? It sounds normal ? Only when you put your foot down and get past 5-6k revs does it throw the Engine code.

What are peoples thoughts on this one?

Cheers for the help
Sam

You've posted in the FK2 section, is it the 2015-2017 turbo Type R you have?

If so you might be the first person to post up with this issue on that car.

Advice would be the same through, depending where you are I would take it to a specialist for a second opinion. Sounds like a jumped chain or faulty VTC.

Yes it is a 15 plate turbo type r. It's under warranty so do I let them continue and take the engine out which seems excessive or go somewhere else.

If the chain had jumped wouldn't it be misfiring though ?

If it's warranty, let them take the engine out and get to the bottom of it. Take it elsewhere and you'll be paying to find out.

Blast around in a courtesy car for the next couple weeks. Happy days.

hows it warranty on a 15 plate? newest it could be is feb2016 afaik (before it moved to march'16 reg's) which is still more than 3yrs old.
... or is it under a used car warranty?

not heard of this one though so if it is engine, probably the first/isolated issue i'm aware of. i cant think of what could be the correlation between a fault code, solenoid and internal engine if only occuring >5-6k rpm.
whats the fault code?

as hazz: warranty so let 'em find it.

Cue Honda saying it’s a driver issue and not honouring the warranty.

Warranty changes things. As above, just let them get on with it unless you know of a reason (like a mis-shift leading to an over rev) why they wouldn't honour the warranty.

Previous K20s could jump a couple of teeth on the chain and not misfire, I've no reason to think the new one would be any different.

I extended the warranty for another year and I'm glad I did now. I'm sure you're all eager to know more well Honda stripped the head off and I've been told it's a faulty vtec actuator which is getting replaced, hopefully fingers crossed that's all it is. Yes honda is picking up the bill. I wont have the car back until the 24th so I wont know anymore until then

Thanks guys

extended warranty, ofcourse!
funny they initially said vtec solenoid, then went towards an engine strip. hopefully thats all it is..

Ok well they've replaced the vtec actuator which they said was notchy and thought that was the issue but after putting it all back together they're saying its stifling throwing an engine code. Honda uk are a bit confused as they've not had this happen before apparently Haha. Fun times

I know this isn't relevant to your problem, but how much was it to extend you warranty? Mine is up in August and I'm thinking of extending too.

Cheers mate.

Car is still stuck at the dealer with no further progress of it getting resolved yet. Honda UK asked them to take pictures of the entire car, inside, outside, under the bonnet, everything and everywhere. Anyone here maybe know why?

More than likely checking the overall condition of the car and for mods. They will check everything to try to avoid paying out on a warranty, particularly on a car which isn't known for such problems.

Exactly this.

Be prepared for Honda's new found slopey shoulder syndrome.

I've had a similar error code for 2 times before. The scenario was I wasn't able to switch gear properly during a speed run and the car goes into redline in between the gears, all the error lights come up like a cristmas tree including the EML and when you plug in the car to a diagonistic tool, it says something like " crankshaft position sensor error " , which doesn't affect anything as the dealer told me. It's just a limp mode the car goes into to protect itself.
