FK2 Type R head gasket - nightmare

Hi, new member to the site have had my CTR fk2 for about 1 1/2 yrs now has been great and is an absolute animal but having issues at the minute, would appreciate any suggestions.

So basically when i start the car 50% of the time its grand the rest of the time its trying to start but wont, sounds like it isnt sparking, but on 2nd go it will start, so i replaced the spark plugs but it is still doing it. Ive now discovered that if i give it loads of throttle it pursts in to life, so i think it must be air or fuel rather than spark, so ive inspected the air filter (k&n), no issues. I cant find where the fuel filter and pump are to check them (searched the forum but couldn’t find it). So if anyone could let me knoe the location of the pump and filter or suggest anything it would be greatly appreciated.

The car is also coughing above 3000rpm (assuming same issue), has been recently serviced at the dealer, but is a relatively high miler at 68k.

Thanks

Oh actually but a code reader (v cheap one tbf) on it and all it was giving me was u1055, seems unrelated...

Thanks chris, was hoping to avoid the garage but seems the only solution at the minute as I’ve tried a few things and nothing has worked. Probable that they will change the coil packs, but i don’t think that is whats wrong and they are pretty pricey but ill have to just send it in and see.

Thought id update this incase anyone else has similar issues, basically the issue was much larger than was originally hoped. I sent the car into Honda and they said it had wet piston, they didn’t know why yet but gave me an estimated quote of £2000 to skim the head and replace the gasket. I decided to take it elsewhere to a local engine specialist with alot of experience with type r’s and other jap cars. And after a lot of work testing the engine, the decision was made to take it out to have a proper inspection. Now completely out he confirmed the head gasket is completely blown in between all cylinders. He is of the opinion that it is due to the design of the engine, and a poor quality head gasket not up to the job. So he is going to contact honda on Monday to see their opinion, he lost me a bit but basically i think it was the groove cut into the block between the cylinders is breaking the seal on the gasket created by the slight rise on it to allow it to flex slightly as it tries to lift. Hopefully this hasn’t happened to anyone else but has anyone encountered anything similar?? He seems to reckon it is only a matter of time before it happens to any fk2.

There is a guy on one of the Facebook groups who has just had a head gasket failure. His is modified so couldn’t make a warranty claim. Apparently the replacement part is slightly different so Honda have obviously upgraded it.

Thankfully mine is still standard, but is out of warranty being a 15 car, so tbh i don’t fancy my chances.... but worth a shot. But if anyone is considering tuning theirs this would definitely put me off from going to crazy with the power. I'll have a look at the new one to see if it's any different.

had a look and it should be very helpful for my mechanic, it seems early 15 cars ran a weaker gasket, that was changed for the one i have now purchased from Honda, so hopefully that should solve it after a skim. Some of the guys on the page had mentioned ARP head bolts, does anyone know where I can get these? I had searched everywhere to find them but had to settle for the OEM ones, but the mechanic is very keen for them.

Thanks again guys for the help.

I would probably think the newer gasket would be more to do with the Fk8 and not Honda finding an issue with the earlier ones, but then again Honda wouldn't admit to that.
The engines are supposedly near their limit from factory and seeing as the Fk8 has 10bhp extra Honda might have upgraded the gasket to suit and just binned off the previous one,
I am a 2015 owner so for peace of mind I'm going for the above

LOL Unfortunately if the information I've been told is correct the gasket was changed mid life in the FK2..... but to be fair my car is higher miles than most with 68k. chatted with my mechanic today and he thinks the new gasket is a much better job, with the slightly raised piece round each cylinder being much more substantial than that on the original. Unfortunately my timing chain and tensioner is also pretty much gone so another item to add to the parts bill.

He also contacted Honda today, and they basically said it was our problem not theirs....

Even in warranty there's a good chance you would have got the same outcome,

I don't really like reading problems like these as they get in my head and niggle me, and they also add to the list of how much more waffle can Honda say about these new turbo type R's, 1-4 year old cars having so many niggles and then having the blame put back onto the owner isn't on.
Unfortunately I don't have any Honda specialists nearby so I'm basically stuck with Honda and potential large bills.

So glad I got rid of mine.
Although I did have over a year of hassle free motoring.
Now the average FK2 owner has to worry about gearbox failures, Headgasket failures, Timing chain stretch plus many other problems!
Honda reliability.....Dont make me laugh!

I must admit when I was awaiting delivery of mine I was in my then 16 year old focus and my mind was niggle free, I knew the car, I knew 9/10 of issues could be sorted at home.
I used it for a week not so long ago and really enjoyed getting in and out of a normal seat, window down and just enjoyed plodding home,
Back in the FK2 this morning after 2 weeks off and I was out at 6am doing fluid checks because of last nights posts

uck im sure it will be grand like, mine is high miles and driven hard and often, so is probably going to be one of the first to go. Tbh i cant wait to get back into mine, been driving me old land rover's and they don't quite have the same acceleration.... :(
