Dealer Clutch replacement or Click Mechanic?

Messages

Hi All,

As on advice from Loxy and a few others i'll be booking in the car for a clutch replacement, iv'e been quoted about 420 from click mechanic and iv'e used them before for another car for the brakes so i know they're good. The mechanics also get rated individually so they need to do a good job for repeat business or any business at all. The parts used state Exedy, Honda so i assume the plate might be Exedy and the release bearing might be Honda so a mixture of parts.

I'm wondering if there's any benefit in spending over 700 quid and having Honda fit a full clutch. Is there a difference between a full clutch from Honda and the one quoted from click mechanic, Click mechanic say it includes Clutch plate, cover & release bearing/CSC. Is that all that Honda would also install?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I want to keep this car for a long time.

FYI it's a 61 plate Honda Type R FN2 GT 2.0

That's all it is, with gearbox oil too as the box has to be dropped.

There are two types of OE Exedy clutch though, I've posted several times about it but basically a US version and an EU version. The EU version don't seem to last as long, sometimes only 15k whereas they other can do a fair bit more. You can tell the US version as the friction disc and pressure plate come in separate boxes inside the main box. The EU version comes wrapped all in one box.

You are right about the release bearing. The Exedy supplied one isn't the same quality as the Honda supplied one and will likely, but not always, start to groan. You get it in the kit but it better to buy and fit the Honda release bearing.

It is up to you with who you trust to do the work to be honest. I've had a Honda main dealer carry out warranty work on my first FN2 gearbox, forget to tighten the gear box sump drain bolt more than finger tight meaning the bolt went walkabout whilst I was on a dual carriageway and it dropped all of the gearbox oil. Luckily I noticed and the box was inspected and seen to be OK. I've had independent specialists forget to connect up AC pumps and forget to put the bolt through engine mounts just as examples. Everyone makes mistakes, you forgive and forget, move on and eventually you find a mechanic who you trust and tend to stick with them. Only you can say who you want to do the work and certainly every Honda main dealer up and down the country will have good and bad mechanics working for them in varying degrees.

Hi Loxy,

Thanks for the info, I know how a groaning sticky clutch feels in this car and i certainly don't want that again anytime soon. I think it's definitely worth the extra cash going for a genuine Honda Clutch, especially since I plan on increasing the power output moderately.

Really appreciate your time to reply, thanks again!

I'll let you know if it's sorted the issue noted in my previous post when i get it replaced later next month :D

Yeah i was actually looking at genuine Honda clutch kits online, Iv'e tried looking at when i can book a repair in with Honda through their website but apparently they don't have 1 service centre in the UK :scare: I'll have to give them a ring and ask them at some point this weekend.

If you're near Leicester I can highly recommend someone, they basically specialize in clutches and gearboxes, cheap as chips as well

Unfortunately not mate i'm in Swindon, thanks though! I'll give Honda a call and see what the price would be for fitting only then potentially buy the Clutch from Cox.

There's nothing stopping you purchasing a clutch kit from Cox Honda and getting a fitting only quote from your Main Honda dealer. https://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/hon...ic-type-r/2007-2011-civic-type-r-clutch-kits/,
Cheaper than buying through your dealer and being a genuine Honda part the dealer has to warrant the work

Get the price from Cox then get your local dealer to price match - saves on the carriage cost.
I do it all the time - sometimes local dealer is cheaper!
