FK8 Buyers Advice for a used FK8 Type R

Messages

Hi all,
I am looking to buy a second hand Civic Type R as soon as lockdown is lifted ( 2030?).

I just wondered if anyone had some advice on what to go for? I am after a GT spec, prefer Red, and needs to be A1 as I've had bad experiences in the past with rinky dink "specialists" and dishonest private sellers. So probably a Honda Dealer or very trusted specialist. Maybe an honest Private seller if the car is right.

Anything to look for / avoid?

I'd also like a warranty, are these transferable?

Warranty is transferable just check its had full main dealer service history and hasn't been modified and you should be good.

I'd look for a one with the 5 year service pack included or at least the remainder of it. Typically ex demo cars, like mine, have these. Will save you some coin in the long run.

Aside from that some people have gear box issues, I havent had any touch wood.

I'd just make sure the alloys are tip top as getting someone who can refurb them is like finding rocking horse ****, and if you do it won't be cheap.

Cheers. I have a MK7 GTI and the alloys are a complete nightmare, just smelling a kerb damages them! I've given up getting them done until I sell.

You simply can't avoid stone chips in the gloss black in these wheels they're so easy to chip or scratch. I'd just look out for proper curb marks. 300 for a second hand wheel on ebay and 550 from the main dealer are the going rate. You'll be looking at 150 for a refurb as they've got to be done twice to sort the pin stripe out. Gloss black touch up pen form halfords does the trick fine for little chips.

I had a Scirocco R before this with the 19 inch cadiz wheels, I know what you mean. Nightmare and even after a refurb the tarnish and the rot sets in under the lacquer.

I'm looking forward to some normal silver wheels at some point in the future haha.

Hi Ricky

First off, wrong colour... The only right answer is Championship White :D

Check sear bolsters for wear and sag from fattys who cant get out properly

Check the joint seams where the roof meets the rear quarters near the boot hinges. They can crack and rust like mine and it a warranty job ( i have not done yet)

No offence to Gareth, but i would personally avoid ex-demo. The one i test drove was ragged senseless from cold (by the dealer I might add). Probably no issue at all, but some had a hard start in life, and would be on my mind...

Alloys are a pain, but unlike your diamond cut jobs, plenty can repair them...and a halfords black gloss pen will see you right normally.

No offence taken, but really when you're buying a second hand motor you've got no clue where its been regardless. At 1k on the clock, service pack included and the only polished metal (which I assume is what you meant below, not champ white ;) trade example on auto trader at the time it was a must!

Not sure where you live to have plenty able to refurb those wheels. I'm in the North East of England and have contacted 14 refurb companies, some who have been going for decades, only 2 can do them. Theyre both wheel specialist branches.

They are still pretty new so not much than already mentioned, consumables are reasonably priced, tyres £225 each, but pads and discs are cheap and easy to replace for a car of such performance.

On the gearbox, the Americans have complained a lot but few in the uk. Personally I think 90% will be down to miss shift or poor technique, when cold you can feel it being a bit tight and notchy so change slower but as everything warms up it should be smooth as.

The alloys are subject to corrosion, had three of mine replaced, the wheel nuts can rust on the edges. I almost guarantee you won’t find a second hand one with mint alloys, they are so susceptible to chips particularly the rears. Tyre life on the front can range from 3k to 12k, most prefer opting out of The Orem continental sport tyres and swap for Mitchies MP4S.

On the road it does not tramline in my opinion and drives straight in Comfort and Sport.

The engine sounds tractor like when you open the bonnet, that is normal, honestly thought mine was knackered first time I lifted the hood to listen to the little 4pot!

AC is crap, it switches off on full throttle, just FYI.

Interior is good, the lcd screen is easy to scratch, bolsters can wear quickly, but no more than any other of that sort. The alcantara material on the inside door handles looses its look quite quickly.

Second all of those points. I got 6500 out of my front set and thought I must have been hammering it until the dealer told me that's normal. Gone for some Bridgestone Potenzas. To add, get your alignment checked. Mine was way out and the tyres only wore on the inside where it wasn't visible, only noticed when I took it in for what I thought was a slow puncture.

Had mine into the dealer for a regas and checked for leaks. All fine, its just crap!

Mine was ex-demo, pre-registered, BUT it was a show room demo vehicle and still had 3 grand off the listed price, service plan thrown in for free and ceramic coating thrown in too.
It had delivery miles on it.
They are out there.

I'd like to deal with a Honda Dealer if possible, wonder how they are for haggling? The market must be a nightmare at the moment. On the other hand some sellers will just batten down the hatches ( no pun intended) and wait for the storm from the East to clear.

They've only recently announced the face-lift so some good deals to be had maybe

Nice grey one for sale and the owner is open to offers...

Put a deposit down on a JCW Mini as I need an auto with better monthly payments.

Also thinking of getting something a little cheaper as a side project
