Stolen CAT from EP3, what to replace with?

Hi,

I am really hoping for some help please. I have a 2005 Premier edition*Type-R i have had since new, she has low mileage and always serviced by Honda.
Last week i found her jacked up and three chaps were removing the Cat converter, when challenged, they came after me with an electric saw and crowbar, i got away.

I have spoken to Honda who have told me they are hard to get and cost £3k plus the sensors which were cut and pipe etc we are looking at £4k
My question here is has anyone ever fitted an aftermarket Cat and if so will the engine management lights stay on? likewise with the sensors, has anyone got any experience of fitting aftermarket sensors? Any suggestions of a good alternative car? not really looking for anything sporty....

I want to go aftermarket as apparently the thieves don't*really go for these as they are worth very little and also save me a lot of money..... The insurance have told me if I put in a claim they will right the car off which seems a bit of a waste of what i think is a good car...

I appreciate i am a newbie here but any help or knowledge will be hugely appreciated.*

Quick search of eBay shows cheap ones at about £160

Japspeed one here (£249):

Can't imagine the pre and post cat O2 sensors are that much. Probably about £40 each and should just be on a plug.

Would say even if you have hardly any DIY skills it would be a job you could do yourself or probably cost about an hour's labour at a local garage.

Can't see why it should cost anywhere near the amount quoted. Should be able to get it all in for about £400.

Thank you so much for responding. From my research the issue with this is it needs to run hot for a while before the MOT and will be hit and miss if it passes. The cheap £140 apparently keep the EML on and are still hit and miss if they will get through an MOT.

From what i understand the CTR CAT's are starting to become big money. i found a 15yo one on ebey for £800.....

I’d look at it as a CAT is a consumable item, they have a shelf life and they eventually require replacement. Secondly they deprive the car of character and are terribly restrictive so I wouldn’t get hung up over having oem, especially as Honda want to charge you that sort of money. You could buy another EP3 for that!!

All you need is something that will get you through an MOT with no drama. There will be plenty of options out there. I’d start with speaking to a decent exhaust specialist.

Horrendous story though, glad your ok. So much scum around.

Thats a great outlook although they have also cut the sensors too ggrrrrrr. I was hoping to keep the car fully standard as it has been so far...

If anything my post does highlight how hardcore these guys are, they should not be approached. Basically if you see a car jacked up, a car parked very nearby with a person sitting waiting and two people by the jacked car, its a Cat thief. My best advice would be to stay back, start filming and call the police whilst following them discreetly as they leave. That way the police have the victim, the evidence and the culprit and gets one more set off the road for a few weeks......

It seems to be the same formula for cat thieves, a car, a driver and two others, one lookout and one doing the job.

I have experience as my CAT was stolen and replaced by my insurer with an aftermarket and the EML stayed on it is currently back with the insurer to be rectified but I think they are going to look to write it off. They changed the sensors and the CAT again still the light comes on. Honda advised that the only way to sort is with an original part. I think the aftermarket CAT will pass emissions for MOT but the measurements done by the post CAT sensor make the Engine management think that the car is running too lean or too rich cant remember which. List price for a Honda original CAT is £2900 before VAT hence why I think they are going to write mine off.

If anyone does know of an aftermarket CAT that does work I would appreciate it if they could let me know as my car is relatively low mileage for its age in very good condition and it really seems a shame that it should be taken off the road because I can't find a part that works properly.

Any advice really appreciated.

hi, better late than never... Honda are helping me with fitting an aftermarket cat as the oem is on a long back order. they are trying a few options for me so i will let you know how i get on. one thing they did guarantee is the eml will always stay on if you do not use their sensors. i have brought honda sensors but trying after market cat.
