Vibration/rattling noise at 3-4k? Drive shaft heat shield

Mine started rattling at the weekend so I whipped it out yesterday. Got some pics before I removed it so people could see roughly where it is on the car.

The big rusty thing in the centre of the picture is the drive shaft, the heat shield is the black thing above it.

Are all heatsheilds able to be removed and binned?

Got a rattle from the car, worked out its the heatshield at the exhaust manifold so this can be stripped and binned?

I would say no. The exhaust heat shield plays a critical roll in guarding other components from the intense heat given off from the manifold.

Mine developed a rattle and rather than removing it, I bought a big jubilee clip and tightened that around it. It's not perfect, but it's better.

Great sticky! Car developed a rattle at 3k so will be checking this straight away! Do you have to remove it to know if it is this or if my mate revs engine while I look will I be able to see anything before removing?

I suppose if you can rev it whilst it's on a lift to the point the noise occurs then you'll be able to stop the vibration with your hand. I wouldn't recommend starting it whilst it's pitched over or at an angle as on wheel ramps at the front wheels only. I have read a few threads where the chain has jumped from starting the engine on ramps, I would think the tensioner would have been starved from oil in that position.

The wire filled bobbins attached to the heat shield are what go slack causing the vibration. I would think if the guard was to be removed the gap that is causing the vibration around the bobbins could be filled with a liquid metal or a silicon filler and the refitted.

I have a resonant rattle when I come off the power at about 3500rpm.

Whilst the car was at the garage yesterday we noticed the cat heatshield had split around its bolts/mounts in one place, enough to cause it to rattle a bit so I am sure it is this resonating.

Are these safe to remove? I've never seen a cat with a heatshield around it before. Cheers guys :)

Came in the section to ask about this, thanks for the sticky. Very helpful.
Hopefully I will be rattle free by the weekend.

I have all sorts of noises from mine ha, removed inlet cover , exhaust manifold heatshield, drive shaft heat shield , cat heat shield.
Still got gearbox grinding sounds from the box when revved in neutral , still got a humming kind of window down on motorway sound when revving around 2-4 k revs whether clutch in or out in neutral. Driving me insane .
Ideas? Almost tempted to sell the car after 2 months

Clutch on it's way out? They don't really slip from what I can gather but things get notchy...

As for the humming is it not just the camchain whining if thats what you mean? Quite common if so, mine does it.

I still need to take my cat heatsheild off, will do @ oil change next month and I need to put some rubber stuff on the inlet manifold under the inlet plastic coverthingymabob as that resonates again now lol

I'm not sure to be honest pal about the cam chain noise as I'm new to type rs . It's a fairly loud noticeable humming though just sounds like when you have your window open on the motorway and it hums.
Very strange. Sounds like a bag of spanners when revving lol

lol not sure then as the noise i'm on about sounds more like a little supercharger is attached to the engine :)

I was expecting a much smoother sounding engine myself mate but mines quite rattleyish sounding, not BAD by any stretch but not as smooth as I hoped they would be so I'd think it's pretty normal, I've messed with a few of 'em and they all sound pretty much the same.

I do need to get the valve clearances checked on mine though, do you know if yours have had 'em done?

I wonder if the inlet manifold plastic cover is causing a hum noise as they do that sometimes.

Strange that you guys are getting loads of other rattles. I have driven 4 ep3s now including my own and mine was the only one that wasn't smooth from the off. As soon as the heat shield was removed it was fine.

I got Honda to look at it when it went for its last service two weeks ago and they must have tightened it up because the noise disappeared, but then it came back worse so i have just removed it like this thread suggests. Now everything sounds great.

To the poster above thinking of getting rid, I would take your car to a garage or specialist with a list of the stuff you are hearing. Get it sorted and enjoy the car.
Nothing is worse than a car you like playing up imo

Yer I do like the car just to me personally doesn't sound healthy when revving and the knocking on the front end is driving me insane ... Had everyone look at it and all we can find is a front mount split and o/s front shock needs replacing. The knocking is so loud though right through my feet even when rolling down a smooth hill. I give up

And to ( the dave) in not sure pal bout valve clearances might get Steve to do them.
