FD2 JDM_DAVE'S FD2 BUILD THREAD/BLOG

After owning a few hondas over the years i always said i'd import my own fd2 when the time was right. Since 2008 i have been putting it off as other cars on my list kept coming up and i had to have them, dc5's ek9's dc2's jdm ep3's evo's etc but after selling my last and final evo ix MR FQ 360 (HKS) it was finally time to buy a FD2. After months ringing importers and specialists i managed to source one fairly local in the end. He told me he had one that had just come off the boat from japan and once it was registered i could come to view it. So August this year i bought my first FD2 and after worrying if i would be disappointed with it after owning similar cars i couldn't of been more wrong. its such a good car to drive and always puts a smile on my face. I was very lucky to find it as its in very good condition, very clean and was the write spec for me. its a pre facelift with red interior, privacy glass and it had a few goodies, it came from japan with a HKS intake and a J'S racing titanium cat back exhaust.

After driving it home with a Massive grin on my face I knew the first thing to do was to get it cleaned up, and it being summer time in wales the weather could change at anytime. A quick call to one of my mates who details cars it went straight to him to get it sorted.

So finally after a busy day (for my mate) I took car the next day for a service and a geo set up to make sure everything was how it should be, which of course everything was bang on. After owning the car for a few weeks i made the decision that i was going to put my own little touch on the car, i always told myself if i was going to own a FD2 it was going to stay OEM and only OEM parts would be fitted.. but after signing up to nengun and RHD JAPAN for years and had never bought anything i was finally going to put them both to good use. I didn't want to go over the top, plus as we all know running our cars is very expensive. After a few weeks of deciding what i wanted to buy i put a few orders in. I couldn't believe the difference in price direct from japan compared to parts here.. so that had a affect on what i wanted in the end. After a few weeks parts started turning up thick and fast, not all my parts where sourced from japan but 90% i would say was.

Once all the parts from my first order had all come i had run out of time, september came and it has rained pretty much everyday since. The car was cleaned inside and out and was put away for the winter, and with xmas coming i haven't had a lot of time to do anything.

My time has been made up of work and mountain biking since the car went away, but i was itching to make some progress with the parts, but with a small garage and the weather being rubbish there wasn't a lot i could do apart from fit the personal steering wheel and spoon boss and MUGEN wind deflectors, So in the mean time i had the FEEL'S diffuser sprayed and got the tyres put on the wheels ready for when the weather turned ok to make a start. Xmas eve the weather was ok so out the car came to get the wheels on and hope i ordered the right wheel width and offset, but being on standard suspension i had faith the wheels would fit no problem, which in fact they did with loads of room to spare. My next order will be for cusco coilovers, GRUPPE M intake, J's racing head cover, feel's wide arches and over fender kit and carbon wide side skirts. Ill post all that up when it arrives and is fitted.

I was lucky enough today to have a dry day, and after some advice on how to fit the mugen grill from a few people and using google translate to translate the mugen instructions i managed to fit the grill and lip. If the weather holds out tomorrow ill try my best to get the diffuser on. Ill update the progress of the FD2 when i get the time.. i have still have a few things i want to do until i can say its finished.

Let me know how the diffuser fits - can't believe you're painting it.

As an ex Evo owner myself , how do you compare the Evo to the Fd ?

The weather was rubbish today so I gave it a miss, I'll try my best to get it done in the next few days. The diffuser came in white primer so it needed paint, it's all painted and ready to fit just need a dry day to get it done. I find the fd2 more planted to drive over the evo, don't get me wrong the evo handled amazing but on the twisty stuff the fd2 would be pushing the evo. I do miss the torque and power of the evo but it felt like a average saloon if you didn't boot it. I can drive the FD2 30mph everywhere and there's just something about it that makes it feel far from a average saloon in my opinion.

I know what you mean. The power in the Evo was great (when it could be used) but the nagging feeling of what will break next spoils the experience. I had my VI for less than a year and to be fair I didn't have any major problems with it (water injection started to leak a bit) I sold it on and it got written off in less than a week by the young lad who bought it. I think the FD2 is a really sorted car - once mapped with hondata it brings the engine alive , I am really happy with the car - even more so now that the suspension at the back end is softer thanks to the adjustable shocks fitted.

I can see me holding on to this car for a while yet!

The exclusivity of them is an added bonus too.

I'll be getting the Mugen lip for mine in the new year ..

I agree, I had both evo's less than a year and I can see me holding on to the FD2 for a long time. I would like a GTR by the time I am 30 but I'm worried it's gonna b the same as the evo, any little noise and constantly think there's something wrong. So I'm considering a 35 over a 34. I love the oem suspension on the fd2 makes it feel like a race car for the road. I was gonna order Cusco coilovers but I may just get tien lowering springs instead.

Looks nice best looking fd2 I have seen. The weather is depressing I haven't driven my car on a dry road since I bought it nearly 2 months ago

I went for koni rear shocks which are adjustable , hardest setting is even harder than oem ! I have them one turn from softest and I really like the feel. I have spoon springs on mine and they sit nicely.

It's supposed to stay dry today and tomorrow here so I'm gonna get the tools out and make a start on this diffuser. Usually I'm excited to fit parts but I'm not looking forward to this, I have a funny feeling it's not gonna go to plan

Wow dotty... That sits amazing on that set up.. spending money on coilovers maybe a waste of money for me personally cuz I wouldn't want it any lower than yours. My works wheels are 8.5J et47 so I'm not sure if the wheels would rub?

Haha, I wouldn't be touching it myself , thankfully TGM is not far from me so I get everything done there. Even the Mugen grille got done there.

I've got some rays to go on 18 X 7.5 et43, in he new year - I test fitted them and I don't think they will catch. They poke out a lot more than the oem et60

I have eibach camber arms fitted which means I can adjust the camber to accommodate. I think 8.5 et47 will be fine on lowering springs.

If I went down the Coilovers route it would have to be ohlins on the fd2 (after hours of research) however for now I'm more than happy with the set up I have currently as it sticks to the road like glue

Some more pics of the springs in my thread

I got some Buddyclub rear arms to go on and camber bolts for the front so just need to decide what road to go down. Looking at yours I think iv made my mind up lol. What Rays have u got to go on? I really wanted SE37 In bronze but had no joy finding any in the right size.

I had Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2 in 18x8J ET45 on mine running 3 degree of camber on the back and they still caught on the back on hard cornering or if someone was in the back.

Raised it about 15mm from where it started and stiffened the rear up to get round it.

Don't go coilovers, they ruin the car IMHO. Even the ASTs as an in between are poor, mine lasted 12000 miles before needing a rebuild.

Optimise 57 time attack edition (same ones I had on my DC5 in 17s)

Looking at your build thread dotty our cars ain't that far apart parts wise, I think I will defo take your advise loxy/dotty and opt for shocks and springs. Project mu are awesome and I wouldn't fit any other brake components, I had pmu discs and pads on the ek9 and a full pmu brake kit on the DC5.

I'm going to order the club racer front discs in the new year (before my track day at spa)

I was chatting to James at Hendyperformance at Goodwood recently who has them on his dc2 and rates them.

I have a pair of advan ad08R sat in the garage and need to get another pair ordered before I fit the wheels..

It's nice to see someone else with an FD2 project in the works.
