The first Civic Type R was a very raw car indeed, rare too with only a handful escaping the Japanese shores to arrive here in the UK.

The EK9 was powered by an exclusively developed 1.6-litre DOHC VTEC B16B engine that made near on 185 horsepower at 8200rpm. The lightweight B16B engine featured a new valve system that allowed higher engine speeds, reduced engine friction, improved breathing, and an increased compression ratio.

Handling-wise the EK9 included increased body rigidity, reduced weight, hard tuned suspension, torque-sensitive helical LSD, sports tuned ABS, and Potenza RE010 tyres. Also, the EK9 was equipped with 5-lug alloy wheels, red RECARO seats, a MOMO SRS 368mm steering wheel, a titanium gear knob, and carbon type panel.
