FK8 Non-performance modifications not insured

Hi All,

I am eventually going to add a hard-wired dash cam and oil catch can to my car as well as replace the tyres with 255/35x20 covers.

So with this in mind I contact my car insurer, Quotemehappy, and after a couple of days they replied that they do not cover such modifications. I cannot understand the issue with the catch can and dash cam, surely they would not affect the insurability of the car? I can see that the tyres might have some effect but surely it would be minimal.

Anyone else had this from their car insurer? If so, who are they so that I can approach them when my tyres are needing to be replaced.

Thanks.

That sounds a bit harsh on their part? I'm with Churchill and they were ok with mine. Exhaust, air filter and coilovers.

Well .... they cannot cover any of the mods! It looks like I'll have to try a specialist insurer. The dash cam would be ok if it isn't hard-wired. Given that there appear to be quite a few people with dash cams uploading to the police or YouTube, I wonder whether they are all just plugged in or their insurer's haven't been told.

I think the reality is that they are not refusing to insure you/your car just not covering theft/damage to non-manufacturer fitted accessories.
Subtle difference but .....................

I am afraid they are refusing to cover my proposed mods because they would not provide me with a quote.

I'm sure they won't mind the dash cam being fitted if it provided evidence so they didn't have to pay out on a claim.

Where is your concern here? Not having the costs of them covered should anything happen to the car? None of these mods would probably even be noticed by an insurance evaluator should the worst happen. They're not performance enhancing. Where is the oil catch can? Is it really obvious when you open the bonnet?

My concern is that they will not cover me for the mods and, so, if I fitted them I would not be insured.

The tyres - as long as they have legal tread and they fit the wheels then an insurance company assessor would even know
The oil catch can - Unless it is REALLY obvious or oil has leaked out of it causing an accident then they wouldn't even look for it.
The dashcam - If the camera was stolen then they may not replace it depending on value but they're not going to invalidate insurance due to a dashcam being fitted. I have heard of people having insurance costs REDUCE due to having a dashcam fitted. Thousands will be driving round having not told their insurance company too.

Yeah I’m confused here, tyres do not invalidate insurance unless you had an accident and subsequently found out they were defective, changing tyres between brands makes zero difference.

I have hire wired sat navs before and not told insurance.

As for oil catch tank, I would be more worried about affecting any warranty rather than insurance.

Try getting the original tyres anyway. Good luck with that one. 99% of us have switched to a different tire just to stay on the road.

Have they actually said if you fit those accessories it will invalidate you insurance cover. Or they will insure the car and those accessories are not covered. You need this clarification from them.
Regards Fred

I think it is common knowledge that any change to a car's specification from the manufacturer's original has to be divulged to your insurance company. Now, should you have an accident and you haven't divulged all changes, even including optional extras AFAIK, then the insurance company would be within their rights to declare that you are not covered. If my understanding is wrong, I would welcome correction.

Now my car is worth lots of money as are all straight FK8s. Should I have an accident, and I haven't for 24 years, then I want my car to be expertly repaired or recompensed if it is a write off. So, I am not willing to risk not decaring any modification, however trivial, so as not to invalidate my insurance. If an insurance company says they do not cover certain modifications, as QuoteMeHappy did to me, my assumption is that if I carry out the modifications I am not insured. Again, I welcome anyone to correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think I am.

I have insured with Churchill and just checked whether wheel spacers were an issue if I fitted them.
Response was that the policy would be cancelled if i did -FFS!

Anyway on the bright side that's £200 I can spend on something else.

I've been with Brentacre for years. Quick phone call to update latest mods, **nothing to pay. Easy.

** Only paid for mods that increase bhp (my remap for example is the only one)

Good to know.

Have you ever had to use them at all?

Thanks for the recommendation, Flashy. However, their quote was £200 more than Flux!
