2nd hand or recon gearbox?

Hi, there is a grinding noise coming from my car when slowing down in gear I took it to hands and they did its the gearbox bearing and will cost about £690 to repair. So I think I'm going to feta new gearbox fitted instead for hopefully around the same price. But not sure wether to get a recon box or 2nd hand as ive been told recon boxes can be filled with cheap Chinese parts and does anyone know anywhere reliable that I could purchase one from. Thanks for any input.

Has a dealer told you it a gearbox bearing that gone? Price seems expensive, granted it will mostly be labour. I had new clutch, new LSD supplied and fitted, as well as some bearings changed for not an awful lot more.

thats bulls testicals, no way will it cost that much, take your box out and send it to a box specialist, my brothers just had his M3 one stripped, all bearings replaced and given a full check over £279 inc vat, if you bought a 2nd hand box id recomend sending it for stripping and checking for piece of mind, im not sure how they can come to the conclusion that its your bearing thats gone without stripping it, sounds far far too expensive, where are you based? mywe use a place in Leeds

i am based in edinburgh. yeah the honda guys took it out with something attached to the gearbox so they could listen to it? and thats what he came back with said he thought it was the bearings. where can i send the box to have it looked at? thanks

ill ask him at work tomorrow and let you know, he was recomended by a friend of ours who's a mechanic for the police, they use them alot and weve used them a few times
