Gear knob won't go back on straight

Replaced my tatty gear gaitor tonight, but after I've put the new one in place and attempt to screw the knob back on it won't line back up. It definitely won't screw any more and it's currently just a bit further round than being upside down.

I've taken it off and tried again and again, assuming I'd just not started on the right part of the thread. But no joy

Do the FN2s have the little nut under the gear knob that you bring up to tighten the knob when it's straight? May be under the gaitor if you weren't aware of it.

You line it up at its lowest position and use the lock nut underneath it to tighten it in the straight position. If you don't have the lock nut, very rarely with the bottom of the thread be in the correct position.

Lock nut, known as spacer on here: http://www.lingshondaparts.com/hond...1&block_02=B__3405&block_03=9966&block_05=hcr but I wouldn't go paying £80 for it!

Use a nut from an auto factors of the same thread size/pitch.

Beat me to it!

Ah ha, I took the knob of first which is why I put it on last. Will loosen the "nut" a little then tighten it when the knob is straight.

Best thing to do is wind the nut all the way down, wind the knob down as far as it'll go, then go back up until it's straight. Grab a (from memory) 14mm spanner and bring the nut up against the knob.

This sounds like a smutty tale reading it back.

When you did yours how did you re-attach the leather that is stapled?
