permanent live to a cigarette lighter socket

Was wondering if any one could tell me if i wanted to wire a permanent live to a new cigarette lighter socket, could i just take a live and neutral straight from the battery?
I need a permanent connection as i want to plug in a solar charging device to keep my battery topped up as some times i don't use my car for a few weeks.

Yes you can but a standard cigerette lighter is switched through the ignition.

Makes no difference to the workings of it though.

Would it not be easier to buy a trickle charger?

You could cut the cigerette plug off the end of the solar charger and hardwire it to the battery.
