Seeking advice from other Type-R owners.

Hi everyone,

I am seeking the sage advice of other Civic Type-R owners out there. I took delivery of a 2008 FN2 model on Friday 10th March 2023 for £4490 (plus £100 for delivery) with just under 87,000 miles on the odometer. I started out looking for a cheap run about replace my 2001 Accord after it failed its MOT due to corrosion. Ironically, I purchased the Accord 14 years ago as a temporary run-about whilst I restored my 1994 JDM Prelude 2.2 Si-VTEC (yes, with the H22A). The Prelude sadly never came back to life no-thanks to the bankers killing the economy! The Autotrader photos looked great. Up close, things are not so great. I have spent the weekend going over the vehicle with my critical engineering eye. There is an ever growing list of issues and I am wondering if it is worth spending the money on? In other people's experience, are these cars something of a money-pit, or do they cost little once the issues are sorted? I am within the 14-day distance-selling rules to be able to send it back.

My ever growing list is:

Original exhaust blowing at the back-box and in need of replacement. Have seen a suitable Scorpion stainless system.
Rear heatshield needs replacing.
Brakes are not great - had to take the O/S rear caliper off and free-off the handbrake actuator (and the shield is missing on that side). I have seen a complete refurbished kit on ebay for £620 with £200 cash-back when returning the old ones. I like that idea!
Bit of an odd squeak from the rear O/S - not sure if that's rusty brake or bearing!?
Front fog lights compromised - easy to replace without breaking the bank.
Mirrors not folding - have replaced the poly-fuses on my friend's 2006 Civic twice, so know the issue.
Paint blistered on the mirror back-shells - need replacing, but not cheap!
O/S mirror scratched - again easy to replace.
As you can see in the photos, the front bumper looks like it took a knock. The trim clips on both front arches have been busted - again something I can replace.
Some of the extra stick-on bumper and side parts are blistering - and one did not need much help to fall off. Do people bother with these, or bin them? They seem like pointless dirt traps!
Gear gaitor needs to be replaced.
The boot plastic has some holes in it.
And I think it will need a re-spray at some point to deal with the scratches, chunks of missing paint, and the fading. We can throw space-probes to the farthest reaches of the solar system, but we do not have a red paint that does not fade!

I would appreciate other people's thoughts and experiences. I am about 50% in-love with it at the moment, as it brought back memories of launching off in the Prelude.

Edit: forgot to include the mileage and an occasional squeak from the rear O/S.

Impossible to say, I usually budget at least £1k for repairs when buying an old car unless it’s a total banger I couldn’t care less about.

If you like the car and it’s mechanically sound & relatively rust free, do it.

I'd stick with it.
Don't have to do everything at once, just prioritise the jobs and fix when funds/time allows.
Sounds like you know what you are doing so could save lots on labour. The brake rebuild sounds like priority #2 and a new set of slider pins etc should be done too.

I'd buy an original back box unless the rest of the exhaust looks like it's on the way out too.
If you join civinfo.com as well you get a forum discount from cox motor parts

It's an old car and bound to have issues/imperfections, however that example does not sound loved to me and will cost you a decent penny to bring up to scratch. That's without even considering the cost of a decent respray either. I'd personally walk and find one from an owners club/fb group that has already had some love poured in.

Red is a bad colour for fade also (my milano red dc2 was basically pink haha).

We've had a couple of FN2s but both were brand new & were cherished during our ownership

TBH I am both shocked & saddened that people neglect their vehicles to such an extent...especially an iconic Type R o_O

For me personally I'd be sending it back & continuing my search :p

That is of course just my opinion & I wish you all the very best in whatever you decide :)
