I am based in the United States and I own a 2002 Civic Si that is quite similar to the EP3 Type R. The car has 360,000 miles. The starter was replaced at 290,000 miles.
If the outside temperature is low (below 10° C), sometimes nothing happens when I turn the ignition key into the starting position. If that happens, I release the key and turn it again into the starting position, and, most of the times, the starter cranks normally and the engine starts. Sometimes I need to repeat the above steps one or two more times to start the engine.
The battery is good, the fuel pump is good, and the starter seems to operate normally when it spins.
I would like to remove the starter solenoid and, possibly, the starter for inspection and testing, but access seems quite difficult. Both the EP3 Type R and SI service manuals (which are very similar) provide information on testing, but they seem to skip the initial steps. They call for removing the intake manifold bracket. But it looks like other parts will need to come off before getting to the intake manifold bracket.
Any suggestions/recommendations on how to proceed? Is a complete step-by-step procedure for removing starter solenoid and starter available anywhere?
Thanks
