Saw your vts post and I used to own one
once the knob is off you need to get a hacksaw (a jnr hacksaw blade it the best) and cut off the top part of the plastic shaft which is pointed.
This will give a better fit to the newe knob.
you also ned to cut off the groves that sick out at the side of the plastic on the shaft in order to fit any aftermarket knob since the oem one uses the groves (this is why it is difficult to pull the oem one off)
I know it sounds crazy but this is what everyone will tell you on saxperience.
I fitted a momo half leather half brushed aluminium to mine. You usually get a small hex nut in order to grip the knob to the shaft.
