2009 2.2 civic key issue

Hi guys

Apologies this is not for a type r but thought I would ask anyway on behalf of a friend.

He has a 2009 2.2 manual cdti civic with 1 key which has fell apart whilst still in the ignition.
I told him to pick up the broken fob pieces and hold then near his barrel so he can start his car and get him home as he was stranded.
It worked but the key blade is stuck in the ignition.

What are his options? He lives about 2 miles from Honda in Narborough.

He has said this morning that holding the pieces near his barrel didn't work this morning not sure why.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

so how did he turn the engine off when he got back home?

he may be able to get the key blade out with thin nosed pliers, does he have a spare key?
