3rd Gear Issue.

Hi everyone l have recently bought a 09 honda civic type r fn2 and l when 1st test driven the car everything seem fine with the gear changes but on a few occassions when l change from 2nd to 3rd with a high rev it seems to jump out of 3rd gear. Now looking at the car's service history no tramission fluid has been changed in its history with 59k. So if l change the transmission fluid would this resolved the issue or is it a worn clutch issue any feedback would be appreciated.

What is it you're doing exactly at the time it jumps out of gear?

My brother had an EP3 that if you put the car into 2nd, drove as you normally would, then the first time you let off the throttle the selector would just fall away from 2nd, so you had to physically hold it in 2nd. Turned out the box had been worked on and something (I can't remember what exactly) hadn't been tightened up enough and had then worked off into the box.

Could be the 3rd gear synchro issue. #2

It did happen on cars older than 2007.

Try the transmission fluid first as it is easiest and cheapest to do, but the popping out of gear makes it sound more likely than clutch to be honest.

Many thanks for the replies appreciate the feedback I think myself that clutch is worn . What the price for a genuine honda clutch kit. So that is a clutch kit and transmission fluid to get in the coming days.

Glad I read this. My 2010 is doing the same. I only collected it on Saturday from the Honda dealer and I certainly ain't fitting a clutch after a few days.

I have spoken to a couple garages regarding my issue and both are saying it is synchro issue so the gearbox would need repaired . I rang a honda specialist and l was quoted around £900 for parts and labour. I don't know if l should change the clutch and gearbox oil first or just get the gearbox repaired. Opinions:confused:

If the oil change doesn't sort it then I'd just get the box done. No point having the box removed to change the clutch to find it needs to come out a second time.

If you are in the North of England, Grinspeed are highly recommended.

I just put the gearbox oil in first for £20 its not going to break the bank and if it resolves the problem it is a cheap fix. Leaving the car in for a service anyway and 1 more question lads the car has always been serviced with 5W/30 engine oil would there be much difference if l was to put W5/40 fully synthentic in while it is being serviced.

You only want to go thicker if you're having problems with the car using a lot of oil or smoking on VTEC engagement.
