Alex's Hawkeye Impreza STi

Messages

Sold the FD2 a couple of weeks back to free up some monies. I had enough change left over to buy this.

MY06 Hawkeye STi in Crystal Grey (best colour IMO)

The early 2.5 litre engine has a habit of going pop due to bad head gaskets and cast instead of forged pistons. Luckily mine has a forged engine by Subaru specialist API done at 30k. The car is only on 39k so low mileage too.

It has other bits and pieces i'm still discovering that I think the previous owner had forgotten about but it has:

Green Cotton panel filter
Baileys dump valve
Blitz Nur Spec R
Decat downpipe (I think anyway, there is certainly a heatwrapped pipe coming off the turbo)
Ecutek remap by Bob Rawle to 365bhp
Ultralite wheels
Mudflaps
Kenwood touchscreen double din

Here it was after getting it home

And here it is now with the OEM bonnet back on

I haven't really had much chance to do anything yet but yesterday I removed the Parrot handsfree kit and sub. So much wiring!

Next on the to do list

Fit an OEM recirc valve
Get an undertray for the bonnet scoop so I can reconnect the intercooler water spray
Change the wheels
Fit some rear lights from the Blobeye shape
Maybe some uprated engine/diff mounts as it feels like a lot of the power is being wasted.

Very nice. Looks so much better with the OEM bonnet. :smt023

Nice. First impressions on the road?

Quick on the speedo but doesn't really feel it. My old GT Four felt quicker but I did fit a solid rear diff mount to that. Previous owner told me he fitted the dump valve after it had been remapped so it'll probably run better when I've binned that off.

Very soft suspension wise, like driving a cloud after the FD2. It needs some work in that area and also some better tyres as the Yokos on it are awful.

Rumble is awesome with the Nur Spec but would love a Tomei Expreme Ti.

i like it a lot, I just don't love it atm. The stock seats are rubbish, no support at all. I've ordered some Bride rails so I can fit my Recaro buckets.

The Seibon bonnet looked better than I thought it would when I went to see it but not my thing at all. Hoping I can sell it but we'll see. The scoop on the OEM is a lot better proportioned.

That's what I thought when I saw the pic with it on, the scoop looks huge!

I've found that with mine. It feels quick in 1st and 2nd simply because of the traction off the line, but I've found myself being very surprised looking down at the speedo during overtakes.

I'm very thankful for the suspension after the FN2, and speed bumps just feel like they don't exist!

Stevie at Grinspeed is going to look at the geo on mine when I have it serviced. It's snapped to oversteer at fairly low speed a few times on me, but it might just be me being heavy footed. :)

I think the scoop is based on the earlier saloons, it looks to be a similar size to the one my friend had on his blobeye STi.

Agreed about the first two gears. I dare say 0-60 is in the 4 second range. This has a Sachs racing clutch so needs a few revs to get it going.

We have some shocking roads down here, some parts of the m20 which I use regularly in particular has some bad bumps and dips on it. The mrs says her boobs prefer this to the FD2

That's what I've had a few times now, I suspect part of it is I need to recalibrate my driving to style to 4wd but I'm putting most of it down to the Yoko S Drives.

I love Hawkeye's, I always have. The forged engine is a nice touch and the milage is absolutely nothing

Had the car serviced at TGM last week, engine oil and filter changed, gearbox oil changed and rear diff oil changed. Feels so much better now.

Also had some polybushes fitted to the rear diff mount and rear subframe. The bushes on this car are unbelievably soft, the diff mount ones came out with two screwdrivers, the others had to be burnt out:

Didn't get any other pics as it was freezing in the workshop.

Both have made a significant difference, feels like a lot more of the power is going to the wheels rather than being wasted. When the guys at TGM ran it through the gears on the ramp however, there is still a fair bit of engine movement so i'm looking at getting a polybushed engine pitch mount.

Out of interest, what gearbox oil did you go for?

Probably the only Impreza I'd have (22B etc aside) these are great looking cars from the front especially. Good job binning the carbon. These cars don't need that image enhanced...

Well I went onto winter tyres as well. The ride is definitely more compliant, but how much of that is down to the tyres I don't know.

Starting to collect parts now to get this to where I want it to be.

A couple of weeks back I acquired a set of RB320 suspension comprising of Bilstein shocks and Eibach springs both produced to Prodrive spec. The rear shocks need some recall work doing at Bilstein and will get them fitted when they're done hopefully along with other bits.

Since i've had the car it hasn't really felt that quick to me so i've been looking at possible causes. Panel filter was the first thing I checked and it's a good job I did. Turns out it's an HKS not Green Cotton but I guess they're all similar anyway.

After:

The car has certainly come alive now although after i'd done it, it seems the HKS filters aren't meant to be reused but it'll do for now until I decide if i'm going to bother with a FMIC which will require an open cone filter due to space constraints.
