Break down. Fuel pump problems, ATR

Messages

Car failed to start last night  leaving me stranded at the Trafford Centre. The fuel pump has stopped priming. AA man confirmed that power was getting to the pump and the ground was good, just now pump action. The pump has always been noisy in cold weather since I bought the car over 1.5 years ago. I guess it finally gave up. Got a tow back to my flat, but in short this morning it is working again   although the pump is whining very loudly.

It's with a Honda stealer now hopefully to get fixed before santa comes :santa: as will really need a car to get around to see the family.

Anyone else experienced similar problems?

Yah The AA, he arrived in 1/2 the quoted time.

i believe typer.230 has had some little problem relating to fuel pumps, and a faulty fuel pump relay was the cause. but as you're getting voltage to and from the pump, relay my not be the cause.

Yeah the AA man reckoned it the circuit was very good. The stealers are gonna check the relays and pump. But with pump being so noisy it probably just seized up.

I hope for it being a relay, but reckon it will be a new pump.

Dear Santa,

For Christmas I would like a new fuel pump.

Thanks

Jim

Take a look around specialists and the 'bay. It's a Bosch pump (Civics have Denso units), the same as normal Accords, but with a higher spec regulator.

New pump from Honda £350 ;)

Second hand pump from Rich £ erm make me an offer

It was the relay in the end on mine it was sending power for the 3 seconds but the pump was not priming thats why we thought pump, deffo try someone elses relay first dood.

I know where to look and can point u in the right direction drop me a line on 07896312917 if you need any help or u wanna second hand pump

i've had this problem a couple of times with various cars, a very LIGHT tap on the fuel pump housing is sometimes enough to get it whirring away again :)

They also gum up with the additives that some fuel suppliers add to lengthen life of petrol. This affects it more if the car is not used regularly or you've filled up with fuel that's been standing for a while. Being a 'Super Unleaded' car, I guess this is more likely in areas where the turnover for fuel of this type is not so high...

Hey Jim, that sucks so close to xmas, sorry to hear about that. Seems there are quite a few coincindences in ATR land, when one person suffers an issue someone else seems to have a similar thing a short while later

did it just die, power start to drop etc???

I can tell you how to sort i if its not at Honda already costin you an arm an a kidney

As i say i have a spare pump if it is that :D

It just failed to start, after a stall whilst reversing out of a car park space.

I sat for a 10 minutes trying to get any noise from the pump. It would not prime at all, and my pump has been very noisy (loud whine) in the cold so you can clearly hear it. AA man checked the basics first, fuses, inertia switch (not relays though). He took the 4-pin plug off the top of the plug and we cranked the engine whilst checking each pin. He says that there was plenty of power to the pins. The pump also received a few whacks from his rubber mallet to see if that would kick start it.

But after leaving it overnight, the pump did prime the next morning, but the battery was dead after the attempts to start the previous night :( after that was sorted it did start again! Pump as usual whining quite loud and annoying.

So it is with Honda at the moment, nothing has been done yet. The only reason it is with Honda is because I want (hope) any problem an be resolved before monday. If they can't get it fixed by Monday i'll collect it off them and risk it happening again (once i've made it to my girlfriends on christmas eve I can use her car). I'll then do the work myself in the new year, pump change is a piece of poo and the relays are straight forward enough to sort out.

My money would be on the relay mate, mine cut out 3 times before stopping on the A1 altogether.

The relay is bolted to the side of the steering coloum, quite difficult to see, its a big grey thing with a brown plug that goes into it.
£75 inc vat from Honda ;)
10mm spanner will get it undone you can just about see the bolt :D

Cheers for the advice rich. I'll hopefully know what i'm going todo later today!

Have some christmas cheer! :santa: :santa:

Anytime mate ;)

If you need any help with it if they dont sort it just give me a buzz, an deffo no need to pay out for a new pump if it is that as i have my origional one in the spare room

Yeah they've said the relay is burnt out. They did mention changing the pump as well as they mentioned the loud whining. But they can't get a pump until Thursday, and when he said..... £500 for everything  I told them to just change the relay ;) i've lived with the pump noise all last winter, and since most people with similar problems have all just replaced the relay i'll get that done.

He says it will be done for Monday, we'll see what happens....

But to get rid of the slightly irritating pump noise, i might take that pump off you in the new-year.

no problem mate, was never noisy or anythin, can even let you try b4 u buy

Strange that relay gone same way as mine i thought it was just my car that was prone to silly things goin on it
