I've got perspex protectors on mine. They get hit with stones and smash with being under tension.
I've not tried the aftermarket ones. I'd be tempted to look for used OEM ones if I could but it is up to you.
It's a front bumper off job unless you have a ramp and want to take the under tray off. Three screws and they slide out. The loom is a attached to the car and just unclips from the back of the lamp.
