Ep3 2nd gear advice

Messages

Hi, i have a 2002 civic ep3 done 119k. Was just wondering if my 2nd gear is a problem or not. Sometimes it clicks/grinds into 2nd gear but like I say it doesn't do it all the time. It seems to depend on where I position my gear lever as it has a bit of play side to side. If I engage 2nd with the lever pushed all the way to the left it's fine anywhere were else is when it tends to make the noise. Thanks.

Well this is the thing I bought it from a guy who has had it from brand new and he said it's never been changed. Pretty impressive to do 119k on original.

I did 100k on mine and thought I'd done well. Only changed it as I was getting an LSD, didn't seem as though it needed doing from driving it.

To say it was on its last legs is an understatement, I'd be looking to get that done if I were you.

Is the clutch pedal firm-feeling and does it catch toward the bottom of the pedal stroke? If so, change the clutch. That might fix it. If it doesn't then you're looking at replacing the synchros, a slightly less preferable job.

Yes clutch replacement is going to be done shortly, was just seeing if it was synchros as I would have it done at same time. So don't have to take box out twice.

I would say it was probably the sychros but hard to tell. Had my clutch replaced not long ago but it didn't cure the 2nd gear crunch that occurs intermittently.

I get 2nd gear crunch when the engine is cold before the heat has got into the gearbox. Fresh clutch about 1.5k miles ago, which made it worse if anything.

If I'm careful with the revs and how smoothly I move the level into gear I can usually avoid crunching so I suspect it's a syncro - '03 EP3 on 110k. Sounds like it's a similar deal.

Yeah that's exactly how mine is Nick. What's the rough cost of synchro replacement??

Expensive, probably at least £300 parts and £300 labour, definitely be sensible do at the same time as the clutch if you can.

Would it not be like that in every gear though if the clutch was on its last legs and not just 2nd??

Not necessarily, if you have a look at other threads on the same topic it is one of the symptoms of a worn out clutch. But I would expect a little crush in 1st and 3rd as well, if it's only in 2nd I would be leaning towards syncros.

As I said before, mine is still crunching when cold even with a fresh clutch kit.

Are you close to any of the specialists? They'll be able to give you a more definitive answer.

If you're anywhere in the North I'd whole heartedly recommend Grinspeed in Leyland, I travelled up from near London as Stevie is so good.

I'm not unfortunately. I can also bypass the crunch by shifting quickly between 1-2. I have been told that a shirt shifter may help my situation don't know if that's true though??

Pretty sure I read the opposite, that people have removed their short shifter to try and help with the crunching

Shirt shifting may not be what you need either.

+1 on the new clutch. Get them to check the gearbox whilst it's out, peace of mind

New clutch yes
Short shifter a big NO
I had a neuspeed SS (tegiwa is same design) on my last ep3 for a while and whilst the shifts were great, it just made things worse!
(unless you can get your hands on the buddy club one) but this will not help a worn clutch

Yeah I thought it was a bit strange as well. I have got the clutch just need to fit it all. I was thinking of installing a facelift flywheel also. Would I feel anything different or is it a waste of time and money??
