Ep3 annoying rattle when starting - help please

is it common for the valves to do this?? and would i be loosing any power from it as i haven't necessarily felt a loss in power?

It is common but not a fault, just how the engine wears over time. This happens to every civic and is a servicabe item. You will loose power but you won't notice until they are recalibrated because they wear very gradually. The recommended time between adjustments is every 25k miles.

right guys.. i know im sounding like a broken record, but this rattle is still there. I've now removed the driveshaft heatshield, the manifold heatshield, spaced my vtec cover and today had my valve clearances done. Rattle is still there, the valve clearance seems to have quietened it down a little at idle, but still persists. Any ideas what to try next?? i spoke to 3 mechanics today, 1 saying that it could be the valves overtime has made the top curved slightly and that the feeler gap should be slightly wider to compensate. I then spoke to 2 others who said it could be piston slap and also the oil hasn't been changed in around 25k miles, and they seemed to laugh at me and told me their first protocol would be to change it because it could have lost its viscosity. HELP!!

Comon guys, theres got to be a boffin amongst us who can find a solution for me!!!

Yeah I would change your oil if it hasn't been done for 25k Honda recommends an oil change every 10-12k miles I believe. Some even change the oil every 5-6k. It is important to change the oil as these cars use oil. I would get an engine flush using forte advanced formula engine flush, new oil filter (oem is fine I personally use hamp) and oil change (5-40 fully although i've just used 0-40 fully). It may not cure the problem but I would think it may help. If it's still there after that maybe some hydraulic valve lifter treatment. Unfortunately it's a case of eliminating things this can sometimes be very frustrating and expensive, the joys of motoring:).

Cheers for the advice, this was quite a while ago and the car has been fixed for some time now :p

It turned out to be the chain rattling against the guides or a faulty tensioner, either way its all fixed now :D
