Ep3 engine rattle

Hi, i realise its near impossible to diagnose an engine noise via a thread, however im after advice and if anyone has ever come across what im experiencing with my ep3. My car has covered 101,000 and i change the oil every 3000 miles with castrol edge 5w40 and owned the car for over a year now and check my oil once a week.

Basically i got a little over-excited the other week and down-shifted into 3rd gear a little too early when slowing for an upcoming corner and i saw the engine rev just over 9000rpm. I instantly realised id massively f****d up and this was not going to end well for me. Anyhow i pulled over shortly after as i heard a noise from the engine (great) i then limped the car home slowly and left it until the next morning. From cold start up a rattle could be heard for around 1 second then disappeared. Once the engine is warm and up to temperature the rattle can be heard at around 2500-3000rpm, but is not very loud, when driving the car the rattle is alot louder and can be heard at around 4000rpm upwards. Vtec engages as it should and everything feels the same with the car power wise. The "noise" i would describe as a "rattle" and not a "knocking" sound which draws me to think ( & pray ) i have just destroyed the timing chain tensioner causing it to rattle just when oil pressure builds up. Or could it be far worse and have spun a bearing ? The noise just doesn't sound like a bearing, its not there all the time which is what id expect if it was a shell, its not developed into a louder noise either but obviously it needs sorting either way.

Am i wasting my time fitting a new chain kit ? or do i just buy a second hand engine ?

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Have you had the car inspected.? Don't bother spending money on parts which don't need changing I have a rattle and it does seem like one of the engine mount needs changing. An I have a noise at 2-3 krpm this can be one of the pulleys either my crank pulley or water pump needs looking at but its quite hard to tell due to having exhaust system and the sound is only noticeable.

Get the car on a ramp and have it checked could be loose heat shield or something to do with exhaust. I also have a a slight rattle on start up I can hear it for a second but then again sticky starter motor or pulley or something to do with exhaust hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply, I have a powerflex gearbox mounting and the two engine mountings which attach to the subframe i fitted energy inserts to. I forgot to mention the "rattle" is like a metallic sound if that makes sense so it has to be something internal or the timing chain as its making the noise when the car is stationary also but only at 2500-3000rpm when the oil pressure is lower.

cheers oll

Right the metallic rattle I had was the springs on my clutch plate and once I had a clutch change that rattle went. Have someone listen to it hold it on the revs and get someone to check. There will be somebody experienced on the forum who can help. But these cars have all sort of rattles and noises hard to figure all bits out. The mileage on the car is 101,000 could be possible it could he with the timing due to mileage but you will have to confirm that from somebody. Check on the forum for the Honda specialists who might be able to help you out or use a good local independent who you trust.

I replaced my clutch with an exedy kit around two months ago, i have been to a garage and had the car up in the air and been underneath and its hard to trace the noise. I'll have to try and video the noise and post it up.

cheers olly

You sure its not the supercharger sort of whine noise I have the same and have had it for 12 months. If its that then I would look at the aux area where the belt and pulleys run off.

no its not a whine 100% a rattle, i have noticed when driving it last night that it only makes the noise when the engine is under load, so say if i accelerate up 5000rpm the rattle is there but as soon as i take my foot off the throttle pedal the rattle stops.
