Ep3 Problem - Please Help

Messages

Hi,

I have a pre-face 2002 ep3 type r. The other day I was driving a little hard and could smell a strange burning (a bit like plastic burning) so eased off. The steering felt a little funny but after about 15 mins of carefully driving it went back to normal.

Last night I was driving home and after around 45 mins of driving I could feel a strange rumbling feeling through the steering wheel (as if i had a puncture). I pulled over and checked the tyres and everything seemed fine. I switched the car off for a few miniutes and then continued home and the car was back to normal but I felt as if I could feel every tiny bump in the road.

Then today I went out the car is still doing the same, but this time with the burning smell. I pulled over and popped the bonnet, and couldnt see anything noticeable that would be causing the smell but the smell was alot stronger from down beneath the engine as if i was coming from the O/S wheel area.

The car is lowered on springs, so i expect some ride discomfort but this seems to have deterioted.

any ideas before I take it to the garage on Monday?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks:confused:

Sticky caliper.

You could do it yourself, depends how you are with working on a car?

They just need a good strip down and clean if this is the problem. One of my old cars was like this. Is it easy to push the car with handbrake off? if not then that may be it.

Thanks for all the replies. Drove the car 35 miles to work this morning and the car still feels crap, couldnt smell burning though. Noticed when I brake the car steers to the lest quite dramatically. I've took the car to the garage next to where I work in the hope they can fix it. It's completely took the fun out of the car.

garage said it was the wheel bearing. Are these expensive? Will I be okay to drive on it untill Wednesday. Thats the earliest they can repair it?

Odd you can normally tell when it's a bearing and I've not come across burning smells before. Iirc the bearing is in the hub I might be wrong though.

Well he said there was a little bit of play in the wheel bearing, but seemed unconvinced that this would be the problem. When I brake the car turns dramatically to the left as well now. A friend of mine said just to tighten the wheel bearing half a turn, take it for a drive and see if it feels any better? The garage want 100 for a new wheel bearing, but im reluctant to pay this if its not going to solve my problem.

Not many specialists up there. If you can get down to Leyland give Steve at Grinspeed a shout.

From experience when a wheel bearing was going in my old car the noise was awful and even then I didnt get any smells of burning. Kind of sounded like a washing machine!

Have you had the wheel off to check that the arch lining hasnt dropped down or anything like that?

Leyland is about 2 1/2 hours away from me mate. But thanks.Well i thought that if it was the wheel bearing then it would be constant. This seems to just be intermitent. The burning smell has stopped but it continues to do it. The wheel arch liners are out as it was catching. Discs and pads look to be fine. When driving the car through town etc it just feels like something is lose on the steering then when I drive over a tiny bump it feels like ive smashed into a curb at 100+mph. lol. Its the excesive turning left, when braking that is my biggest worry. As it is becoming a hazard

The mechanic thinks it is a mixture of a lose wheel bearing (he said he cant tighten it?), a worn wishbone, and a seizing caliper. Ive got a new caliper on order and will be fitted tomorrow, Just wondering if it was possible to tighten the wheel bearing myself? my friend said that you can. lol. Also, how much would I be lookin at for a new wishbone? Thanks for all the help and advice from everyone. Really appreciate it guys
