Fabby's CTR grey 2005

Hi everyone!
I'm Petra and recently bought a Honda Civic Type R EP3.
Joined this forum to find more information, common problems and to see other Members cars :)
Bought the car from a friendly dealer , offering me a good deal on px.
Car comes with FHSH and 3 months Platinum warranty.
Recently the EML came on, Ill have it diagnosed and sorted if anything needs doing.
I'll also need to investigate if timing belt has been done and if it hasn't will need replacing.
The bodywork, wheels and interior are clean without any signs of wear.

Any comments, advices and tips are welcome!
Enough talking, pictures below(iphone quality, better ones to follow) :smt054

Lovely clean car.

EML could be on for numerous reasons, and the K20 engine doesn't have a Timing belt, its a Chain, so unless its done moon miles, it should be ok.

Nice motor though.

Hi Petra car looks in mint condition, what's the mileage?
These Hondas have a chain instead of a timing belt but I'm sure it might be a lambda sensor but I'm sure Honda will diagnose the fault!!

Cheers guys
Good to know its got a chain.
Ill scan the EML later on today with my boyfriends diagnostic tool and report back.
Does anyone know how to change the avatar picture? Ive been using the search function trying to find out but with no success ..
@Tom83-some impressive work gone into your car.Ill try source an induction kit too soon. haha

Avatar. Its in the settings menu, top right of the screen.

Thanks very much. There are loads of induction kits available for the EP3, have a little search through the forum and you will find the induction guide.

As its done 100k I would consider having the timing chain and tensioner looked at. Not immediately important, but the chains are known to stretch over time. Also keep your eye on the oil level, as the k20 is a thirsty engine.

Scanned the car and came with multiple cylinder misfire. Cleared it, then elm flashed again couple of times and disappeared. Scanned and same result. Cleared the fault and eml didn't come on and no code stored anymore. Egr , vacuum leak?
Drives fine, maybe it shakes a little bit on idle, and pulls through out the rpm with no issues..

Eml light + 100k possible time to change the chain?? My 05 is just over 99k and I've had mine changed for peace of mind

I dont think its the chain but rather a connection on a plug in the engine bay or a vacuum leak.
Im not a big believer of a stretched chain or jumped teeth. It would have felt like its on cams.
How much would this chain and tensioner cost to have it replaced?
Thanks guys!

Chain and tensioner from tegiwa, genuine Honda parts £150 then depending on where you take it between 4-6 hours labour
Just had mine done @ eightspeed think it was about £330 all in (jan+feb special offer)
I know when chain has stretched it will throw the eml light on

EML still off, and drives normal but just in case does anyone have a diy for timing chain replacement?
It's hard to believe a chain can stretch, maybe its just the tensioner that needs doing..
Any good independents in Hampshire apart from Fleet Autoway ?

Yeah Chains can stretch and can jump a few teeth too, this would be my explanation as to why your EML keep coming. There are a few Honda specialist down safff TGM, CPL and TDi South, but I couldn't tell you how are away they are.

TGM in Sankey lane off cove road.

The chain doesn't actually stretch. The links wear which gives it an illusion of stretch

Spoke to TGM and they quoted me for £200 in labour. £150 for chain and tensioner and £150 for chain guides from tegiwiaimports website..
Is there anywhere else that I can find the original parts cheaper?

Doubt any body can come close to 150 for chain and tensioner as the combo should be just over 200 from Honda...
Have tgm advised to change the chain guides?? As far as I'm aware it's rare for the guides to need changing.
As I said just had my chain changed and the guides where good so no need to change :)

I didn't know about the chain, just read on tegiwai website
"Genuine Honda OEM cam chain guide set. Over time the delrin on these guids can wear making the chain slack and causing the ecu to throw a light.
They often need to be replaced on engines that are nearing 100,000 miles. Maintain your engine just as Honda intended. This is a
set of 3 guides."

If its just the chain and tensioner for £150 +£200 labour is not that bad. I just hope this 3rd party warranty will go along with the claim and not mess me about.
However the light didn't come on anymore, so I assume the timing is still spot on but however I will still get the job done to prevent any major problems

They can "stretch" or wear any time during its life depending how the cars been looked after and/or driven.
100k mark isnt a bad place to change it, for peace of mind or maintenance
I have heard chains being changed after 30k but also heard cars doing 150k+ on original chain
Depends on what you intend for your car.. Tracking mine this year so had to do chain really

I don't drive hard, the new timing chain should last me a life time. Always careful with warming up when cold and changing gears with clutch fully down :D
Pretty sure my boyfriend will take it for a naughty drive once in a while without me knowing
