FN2 FN2 With High Mileage, Needs a Valve Clearance Check?

Hi guys,

i recently purchased a 57 plate FN2 with quite a few miles on the clock, 120,000 to be specific. Looking through the service history it has had a service almost every 10,000 miles at my local Honda dealership but the valve clearance section shows no record of a valve clearance check. Would it be recommended to get one done pronto? If so how much am I looking at and if I decided not to get it done what are the potential consequences?

Thanks!

The recommended interval for valve clearances is every 25k, so yes it's very probably worth getting done. If it has been done to schedule it is due in 5k anyway.

Issues if you don't have it done are general poor running, carbon build up in the valves if it's been out for a while, strain on the valve train if it's too tight, mis-fires etc.

At that mileage it would also be worth getting the cam chain inspected for wear. If it were my car I'd be getting a new chain, tensioner and guides put on it for piece of mind.

Valve clearance is £100 on top of a normal service at a main dealer. I wouldn't want to pay any more at a specialist either.

Chain and tensioner are £160 from Tegiwa: https://www.tegiwaimports.com/selec...m-chain-and-tensioner-k-series-k20a-k20z.html

Guides are £150 from Tegiwa: https://www.tegiwaimports.com/selec...iming-chain-guide-set-k-series-k20a-k20z.html

Then budget 2-4 hours labour for the chain, tensioner and guides job depending where you take it.

So valve clearance should be included within a service or is it an extra that can be added on to of a service?

Thanks.

Is there anywhere you would recommend taking it to get parts fitted rather than a Honda dealer? I.e anywhere cheaper than a dealer.

TDi-North in Warrington then or Grinspeed a little further up the M6 in Leyland.

Both will do a top job.

What does the full service include? Plugs, air filter, oil filter, oil change, pollen filter and brake fluid? If so with the clearances, yeah good price!
