Gearbox input shaft bearing?

Messages

I have looked for confirmation of my problem in the search bar but i hear mixed problems, so far i believe it to be input shaft bearing. I currently own a 55 plate ep3 premier at 86k miles and having a nightmare with engine braking/deceleration noise! The noise is so embarrassing and surely can not be good long term.. driving normally in second or third at about 2-3k revs and let off the gas it just drones, whirrs and grinds slightly? It is a very strange noise and hard to explain. If i was to pop the clutch in and "coast" the noise would stop until i would let it back out. The car still performs well and gear changes are fine? Whats your thoughts? Also sorry for the long winded thread,Thanks for reading!

Cheers Dan.

Have you had your clutch done? Also does it do the noise whilst on tickover in neutral?

Mine has done this ever since I've had it. It never gets any worse. It sounds like you're finishing off a milkshake and getting the last out of it. Maybe changing the clutch would help but it seems to be just noisy bearings. My cat has also had it, the honeycomb structure has broken up but it still passed its MOT. This definitely exacerbates the noise which is more prominent in 3-4k rev range. It's not the heat shield either. My mechanic has had a stethoscope to the cat area.

I believe its still on the original clutch Sam, I can hear a slight whirr from the clutch release on tickover and as soon as i pop the clutch in the whirr disappears. The noise is so faint you have to really listen out for it ill explain more below..

Yes James the whole finishing the milkshake more or less hits the nail on the head, I am not sure as to what heat shields are still on the car as i have not looked it don't seem to be rattly so i think that rules out heat shields? If i was to run the car up to temp idleing and gave it a good rev up to 3k in neutral the noise seems to be there its not hard to miss haha. i think i may have answered my own post here it seems  i have a workshop manual for a prefacelift which would probably be 99% accurate so i plan to drop the gearbox and split it, change bearings and also replace the clutch while I'm there it would be stupid not to..

would it be worth swapping out all the bearings or maybe just the input shaft side of things?

Thanks for your time!

my heat shield is rattling like a clown, at 3k you really cant not miss it lol its loud. all i can say is if your needing a clutch anyway ask them to check the input shaft bearing while the box is off, thats what i did with mine turns out the bearing was on its way out so had it replaced, but still makes a noise just not as loud

Just be careful how you approach this with respect to finances.. I've read threads on here with guys having fully reconditioned gearboxes installed and the noise is still there. I'd definately change the clutch and maybe look at heat shields, CAT internals first. Maybe check the Engine and Gearbox mounts. I'm pretty sure the noise you mention is characteristic of facelift models with lightweight flywheels. I could be wrong though. It's just my opinion.

Good point lads if i was to have it done i would drop the box myself and split it, I'm not too bad with spanners and technical things. I may change the gearbox oil with some oem honda mtf first and see how that goes.. if that fails it would not hurt looking at heat shields and mounts. start small and work my way through i guess.. It was not as noisey as it is now when i bought it definitely too loud and grumbley. Something is definitely amiss!

Anyone else here had any similar experiences?

Cheers Dan.

Thing is you need a clutch so it's already got the box off to check it.. Yeah mine makes a noise still but a lot fainter, piece of mind also you have the bearing collapse then your in for a bigger bill

True, I will be replacing the clutch regardless of its condition. I believe its still on the original and has covered 86k and I'm not planning on having the gearbox out again for a long time haha. I'm dropping the box myself but in two minds if i split it myself or send it to a specialist??
