HELP!!! EP3 making a noise when going reaching high speed (90mph+)

Hi guys first post here, I'd like to introduce my self as IBY .
I own a EP3 2005 k20a2, owned about 1 month , completely standard serviced 1200 miles ago. Car reaches up to 90 you can hear a slight droning noise, just going over 100+ it comes and fades away, sounds like a flute, I'm just wondering if there's any idea what could it be , cars been good so far , no lights on dash , a used Mobil 1 engine oil . What could it be ?? Thanks in advance guys. IBY

Flute sound , trains horn , it really is hard to describe I'm worried engine might be on its way out any one got an idea what it might be ?

Does it do it irrespective of what gear you are in?

Only things that are coming to mind are wind noise (but that would be obviously different from a mechanical noise), brake binding, gearbox bearing or wheel bearing.

If it were the engine, you'd likely be able to replicate it in other gears and therefore at different speeds as it would coincide with rpm and engine load and not road speed.

Oh, and you were testing this out on a private road/track obviously weren't you? ;)

Any chance it could be the windscreen gasket - I had this issue with mine once on track at 100+
Never happened after that on public highways though. Couldn't reach the speed necessary to make it happen legally.

Erm yes on a private road ;) , I thought it could be wind noise when i first heard it , made sure windows were closed properly they were, ye it fine all the way to a 100 , it pulls in all gears I feel vtec tick over correct, just gives a loud sound which then fades away and comes back only after 100mph , I thought it could be the wipers so I ripped them off , no joy. It went all the way to 130mph without any issues except the noise after 100mph , is it visible if the windscreen gasket has come loose? Quick question if I get it in a dyno would that be the best route to find out what it might be , finding a problem which only happens after 100mph is a pain in the ear. What do you think ?

This might sound daft, if your tyres are asymmetrical try swapping them left to right. The blocks on some tyres can wear funny so they are stepped like a wedge. This can cause a humming noise.

Try dipping the clutch while it's making the noise. That will take load off the engine and gearbox. If it goes instantly, you've narrowed it down to something gearbox or engine. If it's still happening, it's something aero or wheel related.

Check that none of your brakes are overly hot after a short drive with little brake use, that will tell you if you have a caliper sticking.

Then jack the car up and check for play in any of the wheels, grabbing them at the top and bottom try rocking the wheel away and towards you. That will most likely be a bearing but will need further inspection to be sure.

While it's up, spin the wheels to check for the brakes catching (scraping noise) or a noisy bearing (grumble noise).

Big thank you there for your reply loxy. Okay so I've dipped the clutch on and around a hundred when it was making noise the noise didn't disappear , I know I cooked my brakes a week ago so the discs are clean , but will go through your list and keep u updated , the noise seems to be coming from the front (engine) also do these ep3s have a slight whine up to 3000 revs in each gear ? Thanks

Upload it on youtube and post it up here.

Did you try any of the things I suggested?

I've checked most things , back wheels where catching , I cleaned the discs , I'm gonna get some new ones on , but in relation to the noise it's coming from the front , sounds like exhaust I think. But why only over a 100mph. Sorry about poor quality video hopefully ul do your magic and tell me what it is.

Wow that is bizarre! What exhaust do you have on it?

Sounds like wind noise on something to me, but that could just be video.

Are there any vibrations with it?

Have you checked for loose wheel arch linings, trim under the car, loose heatshields, grill, windscreen scuttle panel, I-VTEC cover on the inlet manifold?

Did you check for play in the front wheel bearings?

One last thing, just try swapping your front wheels onto the back and see if the noise transfers to the back.

I tried em all , the back wheels are catching , so I scrubbed the rust off , but the noise comes from the front , I've not taken type r out recently but will be doing this week , top a 100 and see if the noise is still there, any one around Lancashire who is a Honda specialist? I'm from Blackburn.

Ye loxy like I said it's something I've never heard before , ** do all the checks you've mentioned 2moro , do you think this noise is engine related?

I've got standard exhaust on , recently ripped the ccatalytic converter shield off, sound like when you blow onto the top of a glass bottle. So difficult to explain.

No vibrations.

Grinspeed would be your best bet, they're in Leyland.

I doubt it's your exhaust because it's speed related not engine speed related (you shifted in that vid I'm pretty sure and the noise carried on).

It will be something aero related I'm putting my money on. Some loose trim or air being pushed in a strange manner round the wheels or under the car.

Booked in at grinspeed in 3 weeks loxy, to get valves adjusted, rocker gasket changed and sparkplugs .

thanks mate you wer a real help , still got a slight whine is that normal ? Or do I get ste to check tensioners/belts whilst I'm there

They all whine a bit mate, its characteristic of the engine in the lower gears.
At least mine seemed to for 4 years, and i never had a problem with it.

Alright buddy cheers for that , what about having a squeaky belt on start up ? What's the fix to that without using anything on the belt which I never I would cuz I know that ruins it

It will be the rubber seal at the top of the drivers window. It used to be a common problem but most were fixed under warranty. It will need taking off and resealing, best bet is asking a local accident approved body shop to do it rather than travel to a garage.

I had this noise recently but mine was like a low pitch humming and mine turned out to be the plastic moulding at the side of the window had lost the top clip so above 90 "on private road" it was vibrating.

Lings car Parts £68 replacement with new clips as mine was scratched anyway but im sure you could just get the clips.
