Honda Civic FN2 Roof Rust Prevention!

Messages

A friend of mine bought a 2010 plate Champ White FN2, when we were cleaning our cars he realized a thin layer of rust along his roof sill.

We took it to honda who were hopeless tried saying it was his fault as the car wasn't serviced at honda every year.

They wanted to replace the whole roof for £900 of which he would have to pay £450.

We then took it to a body shop in slough and they said they would remove the sill treat the rust and repaint the roof for £350.

When his roof was finished I took him to the body shop to pick his car up and also so the paint 'Guru' could look at mine!

Luckily no rust!

But the guy said that he had sprayed 100s of fn2 roofs and that I should lift the sill up and wax the entire join as it will just give the roof a bit of protections from the sill!

So thats what Iv done! Im also going to run a thin layer of vinyl along the sill as well for extra protection!

I used Dodo Juice Orange Crush.

Hope this helps any one else with this issue!

Nice work.

It's still a warranty issue though. The window rubber cuts through the paint and that's what causes it. The warranty fix is treatment, respray and a revised rubber seal.

I had mine done when my FN2 was 5 years old and had only had the first service done with Honda, the rest were indy specialists.

Your friend might have had more luck at a different main dealer.

Yeah he argued and argued over it took it to beaconsfield honda and slough honda bother were the same as it all goes back to honda uk for warranty work!

His is all sorted now waxed and placed layer of vinyl along it to stop any friction between the roof and rubber!

Do you know if there is a new rubber out?

I'm not sure if it's a different part number but Honda won't supply the old style seal now I've been told.

Must admit that the rust problem was what made me buy another ep3 instead of the fn2.
I was looking at 59 plates and upwards which were supposed to have the new softer rubber to alleviate the problem but I
gave up after seeing a number of cars with either rust, or a lip in the paint where the rubber had started cutting through it.
Running the vinyl along is a good idea though:smt023, if that works, you need to patent that fix and charge honda ;).
I still like to think that I will end up with an FN2 some day and that may just help.

Yeah before I got mine I had heard about this but I looked at 3 fn2s and only 1 had roof rust! Yeah *** contacted Honda about a new sill! If there is a softer sill I will purchase one!

Yeah! 3 of my mates have done the same now wax and vinyl! You can barely see the vinyl I will put some pictures up in a bit!

I was out to get a ep3 or astra vxr and after driving both I loved the ep3 then the dealer said I should try the FN2 and a week later I brought one aha, Im no rally driver but I thought they felt the same, ep3 felt a little bit more urgent!

I think most peoples issue with the FN2 is how topgear slated it! 2 of my mates have EPs and we've had a few little goes between the lights and theres nothing in it! I won 1 he won 1 no really comparison!

Value wise you cannot beat EP3 200bhp for 3k+!

Here are the photos of the vinyl that I put down!

I measured the curve of the roof and the cut it out on a plotter!

If anyone else is worried about this problem contact me and ill be able to make up another vinyl sill!

Stop the sill rubbing against the paint work!

Hi all, long time stalker, first time poster.

Just bought an FN2 CTR 2008 and I absolutely love it. However, it's got the classic rusty roof problem. I'm thinking of approaching Honda in Newcastle this weekend. Can anyone offer any advice? Is it best to complain in person, phone, email, letter?

How long do you reckon until this starts letting water in??

Are there any other sticky threads on here that could help?

Many thanks

Ewan

My mate had this problem last year and had it done at honda I'm pritty sure it was a call back job witch he found out about all I know is he didn't pay a penny for it to be sorted but I think they only ok'ed it because he had full Honda service history his was a 2008 model don't know if this helps anyone
