K-PRO Removal/ Returning to standard ECU?

Messages

Afternoon guys,

Hopefully some of you in the know would be able to shed some light on this as Honda's are not my usual play!

I have a 2002 EP3 Type R with a K-Pro ECU fitted, from what I have researched the best method of removal would be to ideally swap with some one who has a standard ECU then we both go to Honda to get our keys reprogrammed? I assume its relatively plug play and none of the loom is modified for the K-PRO?

It may even be easy for me to just buy a standard ECU and drive to honda/ Honda specialist to get them to reprogram it then sell the K-Pro outright? any advice would be much appreciated :)

Thanks,
James

Have just seen there's a K-Pro section on here, will have a quick look in there, Apologies to the moderators if I should have posted in there!

You're right about everything except the key programming, which is half right. They re-programme the immobaliser to your key.

Why would you want to remove Kpro... I've driven mine with the standard ECU after K100 and it's rubbish. Guttless.

Good stuff, I'm on the right track lol!

Are there different ECU's that are not compatible for the Civic Type R? or can I literally go on ebay and search Type R 2002-2005 ECU and bolt one of those in?

It does drive really well on the K-Pro, Not taking away from the product at all, Its just I've always sold cars standard as you sadly never see the money back in the toys selling it with them :(

Ahh that's very true, I'll let you off :p

Any ECU from a UK EP3 will be fine

Further to throw confusion into the matter I have a potential buyer for the ECU but upon removal It has no markings/Label to state it is a K-pro and I don't want to send the ECU to the new owner and it to be the wrong one, having a brief chat with Euro-Spec they have said it should have an accesses port in the top if its a k-pro, which I assume is this -

I've also spoken to my local Honda dealer (Who have been very helpful to be fair, was expecting ball ache with the key reprogram) and they have said £40.00 to sort the keys but I may need to check the ECU I'm putting in to return to standard as there are 4 types for the EP3 UK Type R

Would really appreciate any input here guys from those in the K-pro know :)

Thanks,
James

Open the ECU, remove the 4 screws and the top will come off. There should be 2 circuit boards, a main one is the standard ECU and a smaller one mounted to it, this is the kpro/k100. It will say on it Hondata Kpro or K100.

Bish bash bosh.

There are a few ECUs for K20 engines.... If yours is a UK model, I'm 99% sure any UK model ECU will be fine. It's the US and Jap ones you have to watch out for, wide band lamda input and something else IIRC.

KPRO's are rubbish - you really need to let me come over and give you my standard ECU in exchange for it, just out of the goodness of my heart ;)

In reply to your pics, yes that looks like a Kpro as it has the usb port on it.
Esay way to test if it is working is to download kmanager software ( available on the hondata website ) which runs kpro. And plug it into your laptop. A standard usb printer cable will do the trick. turn on ignition and kmanager will show the ecu is connected.
Hope this helps.

Cheers mate, your a star! Shall open it up this afternoon to confirm it is the K-pro!

The Service tech didn't say the ECU's wouldn't work he was just voicing concern that they may not all be plug and play as there were different part numbers for the EP3 type r range, just to add further confusion lol!

Very kind offer, I'll in return take some cash that would have been weighing your wallet down on the drive :p

No need to open it up.

That's a K-pro.

Looks like it came off something supercharged and had some involvement with System R too.

Thanks for Information with this guys, Swap all went to plan & the new owner has the K-PRO Ecu :)

For those interested Honda charged £44.00 Including VAT to program both the keys

im going to be doing something next month removing my kpro, when you were down honda did they swap the ecu over for you aswell or did you do that yourself on the forecourt?

cheers

I guess it depends on who you speak too, One dealer I spoke to said they would only do it if they supplied a new ECU! but Honda Trident let me put the car in the work bay, swap the ECU's over and then they carried out the programming
