Knocking Noise On and Off Throttle & Steering Rac

So I got back from TGM Sport on Monday to have a fast road set up done and weird knocking noise investigated that's coming from the front passenger side somewhere. The fast road set up was done and then Tom took it for a test spin and to quote him "Your steering is fooking awful, it feels like we haven't done anything! And I can hear that noise you were talking about."

The problems are

1. Knocking noise come from front left ever time you come on or off the power in any gear. Doesn't do it out of gear

2. The steering is really heavy and dead around centre.

History
These issues started nearly two years ago after CPL fitted a Quaife diff, stage 3 clutch, DC Sports manifold & exhaust and ES inserts. I took it back to them and they inspected the clutch and diff and couldn't find anything wrong and said my driveshafts were ok but replaced them with second hand ones anyway. The noise went for about 3 weeks and then returned.

Present day
Tom has diagnosed one problem, after disconnecting the track rods both suspension struts turned fine but the steering rack was so stiff it couldn't moved by hand so it looks like I need a new rack. However I'm not totally convinced that the knocking noise is coming from the rack and I got the feeling that Tom wasn't either (it definitely isn't the manifold striking anything). So does anybody have any ideas what else could cause the noise, TGM inspected all the suspension components and couldn't find anything else wrong apart from the rack and the front dampers having seen better days but still perfectly serviceable. The car is a JRSC'd 52 plate and has only done 39K

Thanks for the reply but engine mounts was my first thought and they are fine and were uprated when the the DC Sports manifold was fitted. :(
 
does it have upgraded suspension?
i done mins ages ago and they knocked ever so slightly, and was really annoying

That's what I thought originally and Tom looked at them very closely but it does sound as though it's coming from that area. :(
 
Lower control arm bushes, drop links, track rod ends, gearbox mount drive shafts, just look at everything you can.
