Mis Gearing

driving home last night, put the FN2 into second gear to go past a lorry and a car driving way to slow, started to overtake but couldnt get the car to go into any gears, then all the vtec lights came on the rev limiter lights came on and just coudlnt find a gear for quite a while, then all of a sudden it went in fine, is this common or just one of those things....

Nope, never heard of that one.

I've heard of them not going in gear but not heard of VTEC and rev lights coming on on their own.

You didn't have your foot to the floor in neutral did you? That would explain the lights if the car was revving away.
