My first Honda - silver Type R ep3

Hi

I am new to this group and Hondas. I have always liked Japanese cars and have had MX5s and Scoobies in the past. I currently also own a 1989 Eunos which I have done quite a bit of work on to get it into good shape.

I have always liked the ep3 and have had a few friends own the Type Rs over the years. As my kids are a little older now I thought I would bite the bullet and buy one. I'm not sure what I will do to this car as it will be my daily whilst the Eunos will be my summer car. Would like to add some Bhp and do some track days.

These are some pics from the advert when I bought it a couple of weeks ago.

It has a couple of mods I am not that keen on including that gear knob. It also has an amp and 6x9s in the parcel shelf which I wouldn't have done myself. Not sure what I will do about the parcel shelf at the moment.

I will need to give it a good detailing session as some of the paint looks a little tired in places.

Welcome! Nice mx-5 my friend has a mk2, his father's got a mk1, their fun cars to be fair.

Welcome to the club mate! Tidy car. They go well on track you won't be disappointed!

Thank you. I have heard people say they go well on track.

Thanks mate. They are fun in the summer but I have found it troublesome in the winter so it went in the garage today. Means I can get to know the Type R on sunny days like today.

Got a couple of Civic based Christmas presents this year.

Much happier with just a black gear knob.

Thanks mate. Just an eBay special. Don't see much point in spending a lot of money on a gear know as I would rather spend it on wheels and coilovers.

The theme for my Eunos was a retro racer look which I think I achieved. A part of this was building a custom radio delete.

Not having a decent radio can be frustrating on long drives once the novelty of the decat exhaust wore off so I thought I would invest in something more up to date for the ep3. I took a chance on an eBay double din stereo as the alpine that came with the car didn't work with any of my devices (iPhone 6 plus).

I ordered a fascia again from eBay which seems to be a pretty good colour match and fits well.

I am very impressed with the head unit for only £80. The hands free works very well and the sound quality through my alpine amp is excellent. Even the dvd playback is good although I doubt I will use this feature much.

Next job is to tidy the engine bay is it is looking a bit ropey. Just need it to stop raining for 5 mins.

I got a cheap k&n typhoon off eBay. I know people hate them but I had one on one of my mx5s and really liked the noise. I fitted it today which was pretty straightforward considering I have no talent with a spanner whatsoever. I personally really like it and gave the car a good drive this afternoon. I can't see any change in performance either way (no evidence of negative effect due to heat soak) but the sound when the vtec kicks in is immense so I am happy with it for now until I can't afford one of the top of the range ones.

I have a lot of work to do in the engine bay as it is looking pretty ropey at the moment

Open cone + VTEC sound is amazing.
Eunos looking good too!

Thanks mate. The sound is very addictive and it's going to cost me a lot in petrol :). Thanks for the kind words ref the Eunos. I do love the car but just needed something a bit quicker and warmer. Looking forward to getting the Eunos out in the summer.

Had a spare few hours which is very rare these days so started trying to clean up the engine bay. Did a lot of research online as didn't want to get water anywhere I shouldn't.

Before - looking pretty grim

First step was to use cling film and bags to cover the areas I didn't want getting wet

I used a can of Gunk engine degreaser which works really well.

Worked the worst bits with a toothbrush and then used our steam cleaner to wash off the degreaser. It's looking far from perfect but much better than it did.

Will look to replace some of the rusty bolts and better tie down soon and maybe clean again in the summer.

Did a bit more to tidy up to engine bay. Got rid of the crumbling battery tie down. Looks much better.
