need some clarity

Ok, need some help. I need to know what the pipe coming off the intake pipe does. Its not the air flow meter but the one with the valve and pipework going into the inlet? Does the air going from this go into the engine its self at some point, or is it just to cool the inlet?

Its the Idle Air Assist Valve.

At cold engine temps, this valve is open and the pipework feeds extra unmetered air into the chambers just by the injectors inducing a slightly lean mixture, assisting with warm up.
